Comments (10)In complete agreement with the answers posted here. "Cavimum, what appliances did you end up getting? How are they doing so far? Where did you buy---big store, local appliance, online?" Below, I hope to answer your questions adequately. These were the best, most thoughtful decisions for us, keeping budget, our age, needs, and future resale value of our home in mind, with some minor splurging. YMMV ;o) VENDOR - I chose a local non-chain-non-big-box-store because the independent carried the Thermador Induction cook-tops. Prices were the same as online and the local stores have installers. I could not be bothered with shopping online, having to find an installer, and wondering about who to call if potential "lemon" problems. KISS (Keep It Simple, 'Silly' is my motto) All appliances were purchased from one store, instead of juggling installation from various stores. ('KISS' again for us) A complete (gutted to the walls) renovation was enough for me without complicating it with appliances purchased from multiple stores or out-of-state online vendors. COOK-TOP - Our decision for Thermador over Bosch induction cooktop came down to aesthetic layout of the controls. Bosch has the "pot sense" that Thermador does not, which is awesome and I wish the Thermador had, but controls layout was more important to both Hubby and me. Personal preference, and all that. :-) Bosch, who owns and makes Thermador, is also less expensive. Difficult decisions. ALL brands of induction get good ratings at CR magazine. I went and physically looked at various brands (several times) before I could decide. It really helps to see them in person. Some brands have 'square' elements and I could not overcome the aesthetics of that look. My 60 y/o brain kept saying "burners should be round." Round burner design visually softens and provides a nice balance against all the square corners of the cooktop, raised panels in the cabinet doors, etc.. Again, it all really comes down to personal preference. I seriously considered location of the largest burner/element in brand decision. First, it made more sense to me to have the largest burner toward the back of the cooktop, where the telescoping downdraft is located. Second, I could not see any practical sense of having to reach over a large/wide boiling/frying pot/skillet, in order to stir a smaller pot located right behind it. That seems counter-intuitive to me, a skin burn waiting to happen, no matter what type ventilation system is used. DOWNDRAFT - We had a 26 y/o Jenn-Air w/downdraft (probably like yours) in an island and bedroom upstairs over it. No chance at all of a vent hood. We went with telescoping downdraft and these are N0T CHEAP!. (However, the current line of Jenn-Air downdraft cook-tops did not appeal to me; IMO they look cheap) I chose Thermador mostly because it raises up higher than some other brands. The difference in price from the Bosch (who makes Thermador) was not a big one, so I stayed with the same brand as the cooktop. DISHWASHER - decision was really, really, reeeally difficult between the two finalists, Bosch and KA. Both are good DWs. I splurged for the 3rd (cutlery) rack on our Bosch 800 Plus series DW and I really like it for spatulas, steak knives, and small items. Only drawback is remembering the rack even exists when I unload the DW. Duh. Forty years of no 3rd rack . . . this old dog has some new tricks to learn. OVEN - single Elux wall oven due to good CR rating, good reputation here on GW forum, and the easy-glide pull-out racks factored into decision. Separate cubby for disposable microwave. A dead m'wave in the combo oven set off the whole domino chain of renovation. Newer m'waves don't last as long. Disposable (sad, isn't it?) counter-top style in a cubby was the best option for us. REFRIGERATOR - current one is 12 y/o and in good shape. We did not replace it. I had some minor repair work done to it recently, and asked the repair guy if there is a brand out there that is worth buying. His answer was 'no', which was the feeling I got from reading the forums here. I'll cross that bridge when I have to, and not a day before. Everything was installed a month ago, and so far, so good. Hubby and I both love the induction cooktop, which I had never, ever, heard of before I started reading this forum here at GW! Comments (50)I am remodeling my kitchen and plant to buy 4 new appliances. Generally I do a lot of research before I make big purchase. The problem I am having is everything I look at has bad reviews even if Consumer Reports rated it well. A few years ago I ran into this problem with a different house. My gas stove injectors went for the 2nd time an we were going to buy a new stove but ratings were terrible. I didn't have the $2,500 to spend on brand that was reliable. I couldn't make a decision so finally my husband gt tired of me and ordered the injector and replaced it himself. We still have that stove on that property. This time I have to bite the bullet though. All new cabinets etc would look crazy with the old appliances (mostly 1986 when house was built) plus the electric stove isn't well insulated and makes kitchen hot . We will add over the range microwave even though I hate to lose the older (not 1986 but forgot when) microwave that works awesome. Even the cook and reheat settings are accurate. I've had at least 3 microwaves in other house and none work as well. It's a Kenmore. We are thinking of purchasing through Costco because of the extra warranty 2 years + 2 years if you use their credit card + free installation and haul away. Looking at Samsung suite of products with French Door refrigerator with outside water and ice dispenser, microwave, electric range and dishwasher for $2599. sale through end of month. I could buy same $ at Best Buy but would have to pay for installation and haul away or local appliance store similar. Has anyone purchased appliances from Costco? We've had great luck with TV, computer, mattress and like that you can return for 90 days if you don't like but since you have to return I don't think it would work with appliances. Also Samsung per customers has bad customer service. Consumer reports rates LG best for percent of repairs. I no longer trust Whirlpool - they used to be great but rate of repair is highest now. Meanwhile m washer and dryer are ancient but they work and they are in the garage so I'm not buying new unless the break and last year I thought the time had some for the dryer but my husband opened it and it was broken belt and he fixed it. Comments (4)GE is horrible, very poor longevity. You will pay for the “value” of GE when you replace them sooner than other brands. I just had an upright freezer from GE die after 25 months of use. GE admitted it was a young life to die, but offered little assistance. I lost the cost of all food in the freezer. Lesson learned: avoid GE. Look at their social media website, nothing is resolved to the benefit of the customer. Comments (53)We had a bad experience. Our dishwasher was broken on arrival. It didn't work right out of the box. It smelled like mold. Repairing it was a nightmare. It took over a month. Here are some warnings/things I wish I had known based on our experience: 1. You may not be able to return your dishwasher due to it being defective or non-operational. If your dishwasher is—like ours was—defective right out of the box, the procedure for resolving that issue is for GE to send out technicians to repair it, often using parts that themselves are not new and may require weeks to arrive. You can only return your faulty dishwasher AFTER the technician declares it unserviceable. How many months of hand-washing your dishes will that take? 2. Cafe’s return policy ONLY applies to dishwashers purchased directly on their website. If you buy it through a designer for a discount, you may be (like we were) completely ineligible for a return. If you do buy it from the website, you are given a 7-day return policy (in which you need to pay for return shipping) or 30 days in which you can return it for store credit minus a 25% restocking and pickup fee. And after 30 days, your dishwasher is unreturnable and unreplaceable. In the event your dishwasher is defective, it could take you (as it took us) 2-4 WEEKS to get a technician to even look at your dishwasher. This means that, BY THE TIME A TECHNICIAN ARRIVES TO TELL YOU YOUR DISHWASHER IS DEFECTIVE, IT MAY ALREADY BE TOO LATE TO RETURN IT. Catch-22. 3. Service quality is disappointing. Cafe uses subcontractors to deal with service calls. If your dishwasher breaks down or is defective, this means that you may be dealing with a company that is slow, unreliable in showing up for appointments, and may have technicians who are not knowledgeable. As was the case with our technician (from RR appliance in Miami), they may have NEVER EVEN SEEN a Cafe dishwasher before. And these are technicians who were scheduled through Cafe’s own customer service department. 4. Cafe ONLY stands by its product for 1 year after purchase. After that, your warranty expires. Given that there seems to be quality control issues, if you aspire to have a working dishwasher for, say 6 years, you will probably want to price into your purchase the cost of an extended warranty. At the time of this review, the cost for a 5-year warranty from Assurant (…it starts after your factory warranty expires) is $457.75. 5. And…while we are on the topic of extra costs, it may be helpful to price in the cost to you of a dishwasher that is non-operational because you are waiting for a technician to arrive or for parts to get shipped in. In our case, we had to hand wash dishes for over a month before we were able to successfully run a single load in our brand-new, right-out-of-the-box dishwasher. That is 1/12 OF THE ENTIRE WARRANTEE LIFE of the product that we spent hand washing dishes because Cafe/GE doesn’t have the infrastructure it needs to provide fast, efficient service for its products. On the plus side, it is a beautiful-looking dishwasher. And if you (like we did) got it with the matching fridge, range, and microwave, you are pretty much stuck with it....See Moretylerdurden13
