myoneandonly- Most of my containers ar 16". I have a couple of 20" ones as well. You're right - just about ANYTHING can be grown in a container! The plant (with a bad case of powdery mildew) behind the bench is a pumpkin plant. I actually grew 2 little pumpkins! Here's one - Last year I grew a cantaloup. June8 - There are over 100 containers. In the winter, most of them stay out there. I dig up the callas & dahliahs & store them in my mother's basement. The cannas & tuberose are over-wintered there as well, but they stay in the pots. Some things, like the geraniums I bring indoors. Most of the other perennials are hardy for my zone & just come back each year. While I'm technically zone 6, I buy as if I'm zone 5. I read somewhere years ago that one should lower the zone# by one when using containers. (when they are going to be left out) As for arrangement - I figure it out on paper. Although it's hard to tell in the photo, there's a path that winds from left to right (in front of the vine pole) back to the bench. You can see it better in this shot. This was mid-June '05.

I looked at your pix...looks like you have raised beds so I doubt if over watering is your problem. Are those woods chips you are using as mulch? They might be the problem. The will be creating acidic lean to your soil and they look way too coarse and could be affected the radishes. I would carefully remove them and if you want to mulch use shredded paper or wheat straw. Your broccoli plant look fairly healthy looks like it might head out soon if you get some warm weather.

Turf is a strong, persistent garden weed. Eventually it will grow right through the weed barrier and get its roots so tangled up in it that it becomes very difficult to pull out. You need to dig the grass out and take it away. Also, it would be a good idea (mine, not Mel's) to make the walkways between your boxes grass-free. Otherwise, the underground runners of the grass will find a way under the sides and establish themselves in your garden.

There is a farmers market in St. George during the summer on Monday nights at the Worthen Park if I am remembering right. They also have free concerts in the park that night too in the gazebo. I think that if you call the city offices, they would be able to tell you for sure. The concerts are always really nice.... and crowded! I only grew stuff for our family and if I had any extras I would share it with friends and extended family. Peppers and tomatoes are mainly what I have grown in excess. oh... and strawberries(surprisingly).... before the wasps discovered them! Things that my meighbors have grown in excess are just about any squash you can imagine... zucchini, pumpkin, gourds, butternut, cucumbers.... ah.... the best I have ever tasted come from Enterprise, UT! Good luck in growing for a farmers market, Enterprise and Enoch have about the climate and growing season. I am not sure about the soil, even though it is only the next valley over.
