Marcolo, the Domsjo lifts right out, should we ever have to replace it (a distinct possibility. Clumsy me + cast iron cookware = certain doom). The only thing connecting it to the counter itself is a bead of silicone. It's supported by the lip running along either side, which sits right on top of the counter, and by two small brackets inside the cabinet. If I hear so much as a rumor that this sink is going to be discontinued, I will rush to Ikea and buy a spare. In the meantime, however, storage being so limited at my house... The Kohler pot-throwing video? Never seen it, but I can guess. *shudder*

The original sink is one of the selling point for me about this house. DH wanted to get rid of it when updating the kitchen, and replace it with a new, undermount sink. I had to say NO to that idea every time the kitchen update project was mentioned (we are DIY, hubby VERY handy with his tools :) "blush") ! He finally got the picture that I REALLY want to keep the sink, so, after 16 years, we are proceeding with the kitchen project with sink in place! Well, he actually moved it out from the cabinets and raised it a couple inches. Love it! Thanks for the links for the faucets. I'm really wanting something with a little more character than those, preferably some curves. I've seen some, even ordered one, but the spout reach ended up being too far. mom2lilenj, I like that faucet. It is the one I had decided on if I can't find something with a little curve to it. Could you tell me how high the soap dish is above the faucet? Actually, the measurement from the bottom of the bridge to the top of the soap dish would be great! DH extended my windowsill a few inches, giving me a wide shelf above the sink for my pots of herbs, and I'm hoping the soap dish wouldn't interfere with that. Care to share? danielleak450, I love the type sink you mentioned having also! My sink is original to the house, and these are the original kitchen cabinets. However, the sink had been undermounted for about 90 years and you couldn't see the "bulk" of it until this kitchen update! We recently removed the sink (fireclay, 42inch, very heavy) with the help of a jack, and DH cut the sink base cabinet down to accomodate the front edge of the sink, exposing the apron while raising the sink to a more appropriate height for me. He also had to extend the area under the window sill and behind the sink backsplash in order to move the sink out. I love what we came up with! The wide shelf is going to be great for my herbs this summer. buffalotina Our kitchen cabinets are origninal, except that DH had to alter the sink base to expose the sink as shown above. They were painted "wild berry" when we bought the house in the early 90's! I quickly toned them down to Ralph Lauren "country stove white" and that color has worked well for me all these years. As I mentioned above, DH is very handy, and I recently talked him into building me a butlers pantry with cabinets to match the kitchen ones. He did all the work himself, and they are a great match! We were even able to find hinges and he altered the mounting style, so they look like the originals as well! I can give you information on those if you are interested. I'll post photos of the before and after, so far. A farmhouse sink is something you want to buy locally because of the high potential of problems with shipping damage. And they are a real PIA for your installers do deal with, so they charge more. The main guy I use for installs charges $300-$500 extra just to install a farmhouse sink. But it's worth it, because someone that doesn't know what they are doing can cost you twice that in a damaged sink base or horrible mount. Any white sink is a bit of a pain in that it shows everything. Pots and pans will leave metal marks on it, and if you let things like coffee grounds sit, they will need to be scrubbed-not aggressively-but dried coffee won't just "wipe" out of any sink.

I was able to see one at my local plumb supply shop. They have a showroom with many products in displays so people can get a feel for them. You also might find one at a kitchen and bath store with displays. Call your plumber to see if such a showroom exist in your area. The short apron allows for regular sized doors underneath. It is installed on a standard sink base cabinet and so is often used in a remodel / refresh in which the cabinets are not being changed. This is why I used the short apron style - I was able to use my old sink base. (Pics of my kitchen in my "my pics" idea book.) I have heard that a new laminate counter can be made to have an undermount sink. I have never seen it and haven't heard anything either positive or negative about how it works out. I do not think that an older laminate counter could be changed to handle an undermount - but I don't know for sure - maybe Joe will stop by with some advice on that. There are some decent quartz sold through Menards and Home Depot - LG and others. You might find that waiting a few months and saving a little extra will get you more of what you want - especially if you have a functioning kitchen. I was putting away $200-$300 away a month for my kitchen. I got my countertops on a 6mo same as cash deal and also on sale at Menard'sand with a rebate - paid for half and made payments for 6 mo without interest so was able to order and get started. I rarely do that, but knew the $ would be there. Wood is also often used with undermount sinks - probably takes some care, but another option. The only overmount farm sink that I know of is the Ikea which is fireclay.
