french dog or boston terrier?

I have promised my son (age 12) a dog of his own, and after doing some research for what will go well with our family, I am leaning towards one of these two options. We already have a Coton de Tulear and a Shih-tzu, so we are aware of the demands of having a dog. Of course our current pets are my girls and as such do not have much interest in my son.

My requirements are: relatively small (must fit through our dog door), low shedding, good with children (fyi, shih-tzus are not), and relatively easy to housebreak.

If anyone has a frenchie or a boston terrier, how do they fit my wish list? My son has expressed an interested in Pugs as well, but I have been told that they are big shedders. So, I am hoping that either a frenchie or a BT will be better in that area, and they still have that big eyed, mushy face that he is set on.

If I were you, I'd attend a local (to you) All Breed AKC Conformation Show and meet and greet breeders and dogs of all three of your chosen breeds.

I strongly urge you to find a breeder that enjoys a good reputation and track record for producing healthy dogs of good conformation and disposition.

Those breeders will want to meet you so as to decide whether they would place a pup with you and your family. Picking a responsible breeder is as important as picking a good pup!

It's wonderful for you to get your son his own dog. The adolescent and teen years can be a "roller coaster ride" emotionally, and I think having a pet is beneficial for kids this age.

I agree with the above post, be sure to check out your breed carefully, especially health issues. We have a Westie; he sheds very little, weighs about 15 lbs. and needs daily exercise. I suppose any dog you choose will play with your dogs, which is a good way to let some of that energy go. Did you consider a rescue, or do you think a pup will bond more easily with your son?

Sounds like it could be an infection, either yeast or bacterial, somewhat common in any animal with skin folds. Dogs with skin folds should have the folds cleaned gently every day with something like baby wipes to keep them clean and dry. Of course age on a pet can alter the condition of their skin, just like in a human. You are fortunate that this wasn't an issue when your dog was younger. You may want to see a vet to determine what kind of condition your pooch has and get it treated, and then when it's under control you may need to start a regimen of hygenic skin care to prevent it from coming back.

Thank you, lots2do. I haven't done any more on the quilt except the backing is laying here waiting for me to do something with it, and the necktie quilt is still just half done. I just can't stay with one or two things from beginning to end. Right now I'm working on trying to make some little angel blocks to put in with thinking of you cards. Sharon

I agree with Brooklyn Girl...if it's possible for you to take your dog inside the house, I'm sure your dog can be trained to be "polite and well mannered" inside! Even old dogs can learn new tricks and behaviors! If you would like a smaller dog anyway, I happened to like Bichons. I have two from a rescue. This breed is darling, and they have such great personalities. They don't shed, but they DO need to be groomed and their hair (they don't have fur) cut/trimmed. They weigh between 10 to 20 lbs, with some a little lighter weight and some a little heavier. They are smart, and definitely people oriented, so should not be left alone for long periods of time, or left outside unattended. They WANT to be with you! I've noticed that my two have become good watchdogs, and I can't imagine ever being without these sparkling, expressive darlings!

Once Ruby ate a plate of chocolate chip cookies. Her tummy was so full she could barely walk! The vet said she would be fine, just keep an eye on her and make sure "what went in came back out"...we had to make sure she wasn't bound up. Well. No worries about that ROFL! That night, her tummy was just a gurgling and she was very restless. I was starting to get worried as she was bloating. Two seconds before I would have gathered her up to take her to the emergency vet, she let out a toot so strong she kicked her back legs out!!!!!!! She felt much better after that. And yes. It smelled like fresh baked cookies. Dances.

I failed to include a suggestion that the OP consider a rescue. My bad!

socks is spot on suggesting that you also consider rescue.

I "adopted" a 4 year old retired Racing Greyhound from a track in Fl about six months ago. Both the dog and I are really pleased with how it has worked out for both of us!

I had another thought: are you getting the puppy now so that your son can spend time with it, training, feeding, playing, walking--while he is on summer vacation? I'm wondering how this dog will know that he is your son's dog and not yours. (Seems like somehow, dogs always wind up being "Mom's dog." I wonder why....lol!)
