Help with my Rose of Sharon

Hi all. This is our third summer (well, it will be soon!) in our house, and we've enjoyed a prolific show from our Rose of Sharon every year. This spring, however, we've lost two sizable branches, and I'm worried about the health of the plant. The first was a couple of weeks ago. There was no growth on one of them, and so I pushed on it gently to see what was connected and whether there was any growth. It moved about an inch, and then snapped off near the base (6-9 inches up). Hardly any pressure at all. (Turned out the whole branch was dead.) This evening when we got home another branch from the same side of the shrub was broken off less than a foot above the ground. This branch had plenty of green on it, and looked like it was going to flower nicely. The break looks like half the branch was dead though. Is something going on? Do they have a max age/height/something? Here are a few pics to illustrate my story. (Third pic is of the older break.)
