Blue Moon Wisteria Planting Setback

Hello,

After much research, I have decided to plant a blue moon wisteria against my 100+ year old brick garage, former horse stable. My question is, how far away from the brick wall do I plant the root ball? It is a tiny plant now, only about 18-24" now, but wanted to make sure I planted it in a way that it doesn't cause the foundation to fail. Any info would be appreciated! (Planning on training it at the corner and over the windows and doors.)

Do you have a plan for how it will climb the building? Wisteria is a vine that twines, so it needs something to twine around. It won't cling directly to the brick the way vines with adventitious roots do.

How it will effect the foundation depends on the type of soil you have and what type of foundation you have, so there's not enough information to answer your question. I rarely plant closer than 18" or so from a foundation so that the plants get rain and I can get behind the plants to do maintenance. I haven't had any plants invade my foundation which is a combination of brick, granite and concrete, but I try to avoid suckering plants like Wisteria, so I have no experience with its effect on foundations.

Well, that's not the new growth color I was expecting, I'm sorry to say. That growth is fairly well hardened off. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I would remove that leaf and throw it away in the trash. Are any other leaves affected? Josh

Blue Moon originated as a chance seedling here in Minnesota. It was found and named by Betty Ann Addison of Rice Creek Gardens in Minneapolis. It is probably the hardiest wisteria of all. Consensus says it is hardier than Aunt Dee (also originated here in Mpls.)

Thanks..my bad..they all popped open..omg- just yesterday. I guess I thought something was wrong with them. But it just wasn't time for them to bloom. They are blue moon The other wisteria budded and bloomed last month. I thought something was wrong with them Thanks for sharing the photos yours are gorgeous..and wow sure did grow alot. I've grown 'Blue Moon' for about 4 years now. It's amazing... so winter hardy. I have 3 growing over a couple of arbor benches. I have another one in a pot, buried in the ground, waiting for my neighbor to prepare a place for it. The one in the pot does OK, but does not grow or bloom like the ones in the ground. If you want it to bloom well, I would recommend that you plant it in the ground. If you don't care about fewer blossoms, and want it on a deck or something, go for it!

It's a footing foundation but was planning to plant 18 inches away as well. I'm new to my home and not sure about soil conditions entirely.

Have you thought of planting it in a large container?

I was just at Butchart Gardens ( victoria BC ) zone 7, I think, and they had covered huge trellis' with wisteria in 17 x 17 inch pots. Plastic inside clay pots.

Thats awesome! I was thinking of planting a chinese wisteria but I would only do that in a planter. Looks great!
