Denninmi, I thank you for taking the time to respond as do my 4 guinea pigs and 2 rabbits who are patiently waiting on this crop:) I am using cool white bulbs set about an inch above the tops. They are on for 16 hours and off for 8. I don't know about soluble salts.. Possible that they are not wet enough after reading more about lettuce water requirments.. I'll be a bit more free with the watering. Humidity could be a problem as well. I don't run the heat much in my house in winter so it's not overly dry inside. But maybe too dry for them. Do you see any problem with me misting the leaves to add humidity? Or is this likely to add to my problem? It does not appear to be dead tissue but it's hard to tell the spots are about "pinhead" sized. I keep the temp in my house at about 65 degrees, so I don't think that it's too hot.. I wondered if this was an air circulation problem, so I thinned them out to one plant per cell. I have a flat of Romaine growing next to these Bibb and I have not noticed any spots on these. Not sure what this means but interesting..

The pictures are really too small to see enough detail. It's possible you could have several issues at one time occurring.

As long as the plants continue to grow OK, don't worry about it. But this is an experience I had several years ago. I used some soil that was comprised primarily of wood pieces. I thought it was bark, but it was actual wood. The seeds germinated fine and grew great until they started to get their first true leaves and then they all turned blackish and stopped growing. After a week or two, some started dying. I took a shot and replanted every one in different soil and within a week they started turning more green and began growing normally again. I did lose several of them but I caught the problem in time and saved my season. I think it was tanins and other stuff leeching out of the wood pieces that caused the problem. But also, keep in mind, some pepper plants are naturally black or dark purple. Here is a photo of two Bolivian Rainbows that I am growing this year. Each plant came from a different seed source however.

Thanks very much Dupefl. I'll apply a little patience. And about the "wet". For some reason in the photo it does look wet, but actually measures dry on my meter and looks flakey and dry in person. I was hoping the spots were something like I wasn't giving it enough water. I did water about a cup and a half this morning now and the meter is up to medium. Thanks once again. Always feel badly asking these kind of questions continually here when I can't find a definitive answer. Appreciate yours and everyone else's patience. Nancy
