HAVE: Hibiscus October rose and hibiscus acetosella cuttings
Comments (2)Do you know the botanical name of your October Rose? Can you post a pic? I have one I got under that name, but I'm not sure which species it is. How do you root it?...See MoreEdible Hibiscus
Comments (0)I recently got a package of Indian Hibiscus seed labeled Gongura which I believe is the Indian name for H. cannabinus. However the package indicated that these are H. sabdariffa, aka Roselle or Jamaican Sorrel. I know the latter's flower calyx are used to make teas, etc, but are they also suitable for use in the receipes using the steamed leaves? I planted some of the H. sabdariffa seed at the same time that I planted some Dwarf Burgundy okra seed and the small seedlings look almost identical except for the reddish color of the latter....See MoreHibiscus acetosella
Comments (7)They are perennials, needing winter protection. I overwintered mine and it bloomed around Christmas, then went dormant. I brought it back outside with my tropical hibiscus when the temps were steadily in the low 50's. Well, we've had a cool spring and it died; I'm assuming because it didn't like the cool temps. Sad - it was 6' tall! I have another one started and will treat it properly (hopefully) this winter. I'll probably bring it in the house. I have heard about using it for tea, but haven't tried it myself. Here's a link -http://www.hibiscus.org/recipes.php Barb...See MoreHibiscus acetosella/False Roselle/African Mallow
Comments (3)I have one growing in front of my shed it is about 7 feet tall! I had hedged it a bit a few months ago and it kind of bushy. They normally bloom for the fall the flowers are not so striking because it is the same color as the foligage. I love the deep rich burgundy leaves it gives the garden a good contrast. I had purchase seeds online from P Seeds this is how I aquired the plant. I have lots of small plants that I am potting up for friends as this plant reseeds in abundance. I have my red sheild planted in the ground for over 18 months Rochelle...See Moredirtygardener73
