Welcome! I'd do a search for past threads on the semi shaded; in fact there's an active one right now on that very subject. Always a good idea before you post a new thread- we've covered just about everything through the years, and that way you have instant answers. As for the tulips- i'd leave them in a pot, or put them in another decorative one. Reason is, they are annuals here- the foliage will come back and you may get a rare second year bloom, but it's unusual, and you'll just end up digging out the bulb to chuck it if you plant them in the ground (unless you like forlorn looking foliage with no blooms). Daffodils, species tulips and lots of the minor bulbs come back happily and multiply, but not the big showy tulips- it's too warm here.

Ooh, I like the variegated one, added to my list then. I know those grow well, my dad has the regular one all over his yard. Funny thing, it doesn't grow where he wants it because he keeps it raked to dirt, no organic matter added, but then he digs up and throws out the dead ones in his compost pile. So, yeah, every compost pile he's started is just covered in these.. lol Not really wild about the plain ones, probably because I grew up seeing them every day, but I like the variegated ones.

Dear ApostCA, Morning sun is better than afternoon and 3.5 should be okay. The other thing that I would think about is how direct the sun is since you are zone 9. Our sun here can be very direct (due to altitude). So, far though the shade plants are doing okay with what they have. Hostas are good ones for your situation because they will grow in whatever light, unless they get too much burning sun. One lady said that for the first year she grew them in sun so they would get big and then moved them later. Istanbuljoy
