I've seen this on FB also. I'll be interested in what you think. Something about cold oatmeal doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it's better than I'm imagining.

I'm not familiar with anything called "overnight oats," but I have on occasion soaked steel-cut oats overnight to reduce cooking time in the morning.

It looks like good food. What someone might want to eat for breakfast, all stirred up.

I think the appeal is that it's grab and go in the morning, and sweet while being pretty healthy.

The trendy part is that it's made in a jar. :) The great thing about jars is that they're hard to break, unlike many other glass containers, and the glass is non-porous and non-reactive. A lot of commercial glass has plastics in it, but I think they're pretty inert, and don't leech a lot of chemicals into the food. Glass jars are easy to clean too, though the lids are variable.

This is the first I have heard of it, but after looking at the link, I'd say at least it's a healthier option. Plus I don't know about you, but the idea of cooking oats in the summer is so not appealing. I think my kids would love this if it tastes good.

I like it. I've tried it a few times. My favorite is a Banana Cream Pie recipe I found. Of course it doesn't taste like pie but it's good!

I got into it after cruising on the Holland America and really enjoying their muesli.

I'm just wondeing about the chia seeds. I bought a small package for .99 at save a lot, hope they are bearable. I plan on heating this up if not good cold.

Chia seeds don't really taste like anything - they are just nutritious and will become gelatinous. I've made pudding with them before.

I'm with Alisande, way too much sugar and fu fu in the linked "recipes". They look more like desserts, and I mean that not in a positive sense.

I like whole grain steel cut oats the best, they're more nutritious and deliver less of an instant carb jolt than the other types of oatmeal. They take maybe 25 minutes to cook,.

I like muesli too, the fresh varieties are common at hotel breakfast buffets in Scandinavia and Germanic parts of Europe. The only problem is, it's very high in calories.

Heck, I just pour some old fashioned oatmeal into a bowl and pour milk on it and I'm good to go. It's best if you let it sit for a few minutes to soften. No sugar, no nothing although a few raisins are tasty but not necessary for me.

I prefer steel cut oats too, but they take too long in the heat of summer. You can cut cooking time down to 12 minutes if you soak overnight but where I live not only do you have to worry about heat, but also peak electricity cost. So I like the idea of the prepped and ready to go. I think these would be good for kids lunches too if you can put a cooler pack in there.

You could use the recipes listed as a guide and just do it to preference. That's kind of my motto for cooking, not usually a stick to the recipe kind of gal.

We also get these great rye flakes whenever we head into nearby 1/2 hour drive town. It's a mill and they do loads of bulk foods. They have this fantastic muesli but it's with dried dates and raisins, it's sooo good.

Overnight steel cut oats in a crock are delicious. For overnight oats, i just add unsweetened almond milk and honey. My kids love both.

I tried overnight oats a couple of years ago. I thought it was cool that I could prepare my breakfast the night before and take it to work with me. And it looked so darned cute in the jars, LOL. Well, the oats tasted a bit chalky to me. I could eat it, but I didn't really enjoy it. I like my oats either cooked, as in "regular" oatmeal, or toasted, as in granola. And granola is my new favorite breakfast and often lunch. I've been making it myself lately. Not because it saves me money, but because I can make it to my liking. My favorite is from Hungry, Hungry Hippie's website, with a few tweaks. Almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, quinoa, coconut, oats and maple syrup. I think I could eat it for all three meals, LOL.

The flax seed addition caught my eye. The flax seeds need to be "cut up" in a mill for human bodies to glean their nutritional value. Makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the article.

the verdict:
It was ok, I don't think I'll be making it again. I would rather have had instant oatmeal that tastes good. This had too much of a yogurt taste an the mango got very stringy. The chia seeds were fine, it just added more texture. I did heat it up for a minute. It was ok cold too. Maybe I'll try it again with less or no yogurt and different fruit.

Been eating steel cut oats for years I boil 2 cups water add 1 cup of oats turn stove off for maybe 1/2 let sit keep in fridge take out and heat up what I want in the am. good for a week Like mine with some fruit almond milk and flax or chia seeds

It's great for breakfast in summer. Been doing it for about a year, but a little too cold in winter and spring. I just use = parts milk and oats with some nuts and craisins or chopped up dried figs. We love just reaching in the fridge and having breakfast ready. Not a fan of any yogurt. Hubby even puts yogurt on cold cereal. Shudder.

Whenever I eat plain yogurt with fruit I add in I also stir in a handful of large rolled oats and eat right away.

I like oatmeal and milk, and eat it cold. It's very filling. If I have a banana or an apple, I throw that in as well. Ground flax seed. I love ground flax and put it in almost everything. Whole flaxseed just pass through your system whole, so there's not benefit whatsoever in it.

This is a quick method of having quick hot oats for breakfast,I have been doing it for years. Put 1/3 cup of oats in a cereal bowl (that is micro wave safe) add 2/3 cup of water a pinch of salt and cook for 1 1/2 minutes on high. Wonderful breakfast with a banana on top and a bit of brown sugar, fast easy and very easy on the budget. Have a happy day everyone.

teddybear, my husband does that in the microwave, same with creamed wheat. I find it pasty though. Could be how he cooks it though. My oldest son will do quick oats with boiling water poured on it (he hates milk). Tried it once and was not a fan. I will try your version of the oats in the microwave though, might be the amounts the husband puts in.

When I was working, I put old fashioned oats in a leakproof glass container (a canning jar would work), pour boiling water over them, add frozen blueberries and cinnamon, and let them be until I got to work. On my break, I'd heat them for a minute or two in the microwave and add nonfat yogurt or milk before eating. Sometimes I'd make a big bowl and do the same thing (pour boiling water over the oats and then put in the refer). When I wanted to eat some, I'd just put in a bowl and microwave for a few minutes. They don't get gluey that way.

"I mean that not in a positive sense" so you mean in a negative sense? LOL! that really had me guffawing.

When I am trying to eat in healthy ways, I will make a large batch of oatmeal or eggs ahead of time, because both reheat pretty well. You don't have to eat it cold? Do you?

I eat steel cut oats often. Pour boiling water from the teakettle on them & cover the bowl for 10minutes or so. Then nuke for 1 1/2 - 2 minutes & let rest covered for another 10 min. I don't use sugar, honey, or sweetener, but do add a lot of cinnamon. Depending on the season add fresh or dried fruit &/ or nuts. Today it was strawberries, blueberries,& almonds. Mmmmm...yummy. Sometimes I'll add a spoon of coconut oil, which is also good.

Occasionally, if I remember, I will soak the SCO In tap water the night before & just leave it on the counter, covered...speeds up the morning process if needed be.
