Direct planting/planting from seed under fabric

I used weed fabric as a substitute for black plastic mulch this year (I know, I used what I had instead of what I didn't buy. I'm sure nature will find a way to pay me back for it :-) but that's not my current question.) I know how to transplant plants out into the garden, but how big of a hole do I need to cut for a seed to germinate? Or do I just need to cut a slit large enough to accommodate the growing seedling and the eventual stalk? Or, will I have germination problems from under the fabric, and should I plant everything as a transplant, even if I would normally direct seed?
