Two cabinet heights/what to do with windows below counter height
Comments (4)Thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback. The butcher block island/table we have there now has really great functionality for me. I have the microwave (which I kind of hate having) and my breville toaster oven on the lower shelf and I also store my kitchenaid down there. The top that lines up with the countertops is amazing for giving me lots of working space. It's just awkward with the windows being below and aesthetically it doesn't really jibe with the rest of the kitchen now... Dumb questions - with the windows - is it possible to just raise the sill up/just get a smaller bottom pane to the window? Removing the entire window and moving them up will not be possible right now (we just finished renovating the rest of the kitchen - moving water and gas, opening wall, new flooring counters, etc.!) The real pain is that they only need to come up about 2-3 inches if I were to make the counter be the sill. I like the idea of doing something like a 30 or 33 and having a butcher block. The only issue with that is that I was planning on having butcher block for the countertop since we just did the countertops throughout the kitchen with White Macauba... I guess I could possibly do different woods if I were to have a butcher block counter and a thick block on top... I am still open to any and all suggestions! Thanks!...See Morewhich comes first: counter-height windows or counters?
Comments (5)I put in a counter height window after the cabinets were in, so any necessary shimming wouldn't mess up the height. The window should be installed before the counters are templated if you want the countertop to extend onto the window sill area. You need to know the exact heights of everything ahead of time so it all matches up. It is nice for the counter to extend onto the sill but unfortunately, it snowed the day of my window install (the only snow of the whole year) and the counters were templated before the window was put in. So I ended up with the counter being installed the same day as the window. Talk about chaos. I still haven't filled in that tiny strip of sill because I am still irritated about the chain of events. I am hoping when I get soapstone counters put in my bathroom, they can add the strip to the counter. Since soapstone has an invisible seam, it should look okay. It was one of the few things I paid for because I was nervous about the height of the cutout but it was not a big deal for the guy that did the work. by the way; shezzy; I love your butcher block piece!!!!...See MoreKitchen window right up to counter top?
Comments (7)Counter-height windows are actually not that unusual - at least not on this site! When we remodeled, we replaced our bay window that was 22" off the floor for one that's 36" off the floor with the counter all the way into the well - and we love it! I will say that our bay is 18" deep, so that makes our counters pretty deep behind the sink. We do have wood on the bottom b/c of a measuring error (long story), but it's only a short piece. We have had no issues with it - it's been almost 9 years now. One thing to keep in mind is that if the bay area is too deep, it may be difficult for you to open windows (casement are best in this situation) or clean the windows. We're a tall family and it's a bit deep even for us. [I have my DH and DS clean the windows b/c they're well over 6' tall (6'5" & 6'7", respectively).] Being able to reach all the way to back for cleaning the counters is also a consideration. (I have no problems with that, I can reach the windows, I just can't reach the tops of the windows for cleaning!) Measure your arm reach b/f you finalize your plans to be sure you can reach what you need to reach. I suspect a bumpout 9" to 12" is the limit for most people. Here's a thread that has pictures of counter-height windows. Mine is in it - as I recall, it's from b/f our remodel was done, but it will show you what we did. I particularly like MamaDadaPaige's (8" bumpout) and ErickaNH's (6" bumpout) windows - MamaDadaPaige's is close to the top of the thread and ErikaNH's is half-way down the thread. They posted both interior and exterior pictures. counter height window pictures please http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2484108/counter-height-window-pictures-please . The above thread also contains instructions for determining the correct height to install the window(s) - based on your finished floor height....See MoreHi - Any ideas for paint color above green counter top? They’re lined, the pattern in the larger one is matched up so it looks like one piece and the seams are under the sashes. They’re beyond perfect plus the turn around time was great and they returned all the unused fabric to me. Sorry, the pictures don’t show them very well. Oh! And if you find a style you want that they don’t have on their site, just ask them, they will most likely be able to accomodate you. I plan on having valances for my walk in pantry and our masterbath made by the as well. https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheIvyTrellis?ref=l2-shopheader-name...See Moregreasetrap
