Baby Deer

Just yesterday I was mowing along the driveway and a baby deer popped up out of the tall grass over the fence in the pasture. He was only about 18 inches tall and still a little wobbly, so he must have been born very recently.

Unfortunately he was heading straight for the road. He stopped at the top of the hill along the road, hiding beneath a bush, but since my sister was mowing the pasture I was afraid the tractor sound would push him over the edge (figuratively and literally) and cause him to tumble down the hill to the road. I walked quietly down to the road, and stood quietly between him and the road. He was standing there staring at me for about 2 minutes, before running along the top of the hill and turning back into the pasture. I didn't have my camera, but he was extremely cute.

It's that time of year. Just found this in the yard under a bush. It ignored the dogs and the dogs ran right past :-) I guess it's true they have no scent as newborns, because my Katy has a darn good nose.

Planting any plant among the raspberries will not change the flavor of the future berries. Raspberry plants will not affect an established lilac hedge. Spearmint is aggressive and spreading, but should not hamper established raspberries. It could hinder pruning out old canes and telling them apart from new canes if the mint becomes a tangle around the canes. I assume you don't mind tending or harvesting your berries surrounded by bees!

Thyme- The Hidcote lavender has worked really well. Great fragrance, very winter hardy and keeps the deer away from the rest of the garden. Lavender, salvia, cosmos, alyssum, they all seem to be keeping the deer away. Also, the lilacs, butterfly bushes and blueberries have kept them out of the fairy garden...at least, so far. Now, I just need to find some garlic to get rid of the aphids that have suddenly appeared on my roses. I have ladybugs, but they're all in the kitchen garden on the weeds I'm trying to get rid of this weekend. Maybe I can move the ladybugs up to the front garden, by shaking them off the weeds and onto the roses :) I'm not saying lavender would keep out hungry deer, just that these deer don't like the smell...and they're not hungry deer, just curious. Very cute, though. Two moms and three babies (who still have their spots) that travel back and forth, along the creek, between our place and a few other places down the road.

hosenemesis,No, didn't turn the hose on them.I started out and seen them and backed up and got my camera,and they had moved away a little,then I just opened the door just far enough to take pictures of them.I left the flash off then the pictures was so dark couldn't see them,so I lightedned them up and got too much light on them.I finally stepped outside and they seen me and away they went to the woods thats maybe 300 feet down back.I have Racoons and possums here too.Got rid of my pond because Racoons got in it and ate the fish,plus a couple water mocassins found the pond too and decided to make it there home.So pond went out and roses went in, the possums comes along some times and digs up the roses. Rita, can't have a dog as my yard is not fenced in,except a little small area in front that I am filling with plants.It was originally fenced in when I had a toy poodle,so could let her out awhile,and had a goldfish pool out there, too,had the pool before the dog,and had to fence it in to keep kids from throwing rocks in it trying to hit the fish on the head..The fence is not completly closed in no more.It has about 2 ft on each side where it doesn't come up to the house and can walk around it,We have a leash law here,if you own a dog it has to be ket on a leash or inside a fenced in yard. Julie,i don't find the deer cute either when they in my yard destroying everything.The early part of spring,I had some deer scam I sprinkled out around everything I didn't want ate upand it worked real good.Deer won't touch a bush that has that around it,I ran out of it,and my daughter bought me some for a second treatment,and I had gorgeous roses for awhile,till we got a monsoon and washed it all away.Couldn't afford to buy m ore of it,so was spraying them with a mixture that worked good also,but it comes a rain and washes it off and here comes the deer again. I've gone out looking 3 times and no sign of it, so it must have figured out how to get out. Or maybe Mama came back and told it how to do it. Hope they don't tell all the relatives or there goes the garden and roses! Clare

Mama was close by if not watching. Bob did the right thing, good job! Fawns are so good at blending and being still, that's their natural defense from predators, along with being I scented for a short while, as they get stronger and learn how their legs work.

I'm convinced that the does consider me the local babysitter, so they drop them off for the day and go out to lunch :-)

I learned very fast living where I do, when you see a baby hiding, that means mamma went to the other side of road and one day I see four little ears peeking and shaking and I stopped my car and no cars yet but just in case and the older baby got over the road and finally one of them went and struggled to get up the little slope and made it and then the last one and by this time cars were coming and I put up my hand to stop and people do once they realize what it is and then they were all safe. But I always knew you see a baby, the mamma is usually on the other side of the road and they must go too.
They are so cute and so many are twins being born, we would see then when lived at the house, they would come through our acreage and through to the back area all the time, and it was cute watching them.

I dread if we have any babies...we live on a 40 mph road (with speeders) and have lost 2 deer in several years. we have vacant lots with trees and shelter but are urban...we had 3 walk thru the other day. but headed in the right direction....one of pals in her old home fed them but she was in a rual setting and very few cars...her one mama deer would come up to the house....

the deer do come and nibble on fallen squirrel food (lots of dried corn) and we had one spend the day in the small vacant lot next door. it slept in a snow bank...called my sil who is a hunter to see if I should call anyone but he assured me it was normal behavior...
