Need help with natural stone pebble tiles

We just purchased a cottage that has stone pebble tiles on the floor. All around the room edges it looks great but in the middle of the floor the grout looks scratched and discolored, dirty looking. Is there any way to improve the grout so it looks white and unscratched? I hate to cover the beautiful pebbles with a rug.

You might try scrubbing it with a dilute solution of white vinegar.

set the slabs on a compacted gravel (21a/crusher run) base. Ask the stoneyard for approximate weights and plan accordingly (machine, strong friends, # of Advil on hand). For a first timer the more straight and square they are, the easier they are to install in a stable, durable manner. If you can't find natural stone squared off, look into Rocka steps by Techo_bloc as a reasonable alternative

We just about are finished with our wrap around porch. We did the floor surface in irregular PA Blue Stone with some pieces of lavendar blue stone thrown in. The front and sides are a Corning product (dressed fieldstone). We are so happy with the results. It feels solid and looks like it's been there all along. The first photo shows the floor before the mortar was put in the joints. The second photo is of the porch and the stone on the face.
