ken_adrian, I took that photo at Island Drive Park in Adrian (which is where I live). Here's what it says about S. marilandica on the U of M herbarium site: Not always easily distinguished from S. lanceolata, though frequently taller and more branched. The sides of the stem in S. marilandica are usually ñ grooved or channeled, while in the other species the sides are usually flat or slightly convex, and the leaves of the latter are often more irregularly toothed (even somewhat incised toward the base). In this photo the stems do seem deeply grooved. I'm going back after the lawn guy leaves and take more photos.

Thanks for answering so quickly. The person is elderly and moved here from Louisiana(?) She has no photo and apparently no one that she knew is left from whence she came. So she can't call anyone to ask. I understand the dilemma about having such limited info and appreciate your efforts in trying to help. I'll show the pix of Lantana, Leycesteria, and Hibiscus. The impression I got was that the same bloom changed colors over time, similar to, but not the same as, oak leaf hydrangea (my analogy). It blooms in the spring.

Cardamine bulbosa, or similar. But that's just a guess. It really needs a shot of the leaves to lock down the ID.

We call it Swamp Sunflower out here. Grows in the ditches and wild places. Continues to grow from the roots as well as drop seeds. Hardy. Perennial. Comes back faithfully. Can be cut back so that it stays lower to the ground if you only want flowers 18" high for example. Single stems easy to pull out if you want it thinned or have stragglers you don't want. Flowers are long blooming and look nice. Repeat bloomer especially if you deadhead. Heidi
