Help!! Newbie Needs Japanese Maple Info
Comments (2)Well, I just finished looking at that thread. I'm not trying to create a screen or a hedge. I just love japanese maples and thought it would be a good place to grow some. Any thoughts on hard-to-grow cultivars to avoid? Suggestions for ones that are easier to grow?...See MoreNeed help: Japanese maple tree dried up
Comments (13)Unless one is very skilled, it is not a good idea to prune JM's to reduce or control size, especially with weeping dissectums like this one, as it inevitably compromises or alters their natural growth habit and impacts appearance. If the tree is too big, it is in the wrong place :-) I would urge you to consider removing it and replacing it with something that will stay in scale for the area and that will better tolerate sunlight and heat reflecting off those white walls. Transplant the maple (and now is an excellent time to do so) to a less visible, more out of the way area that receives afternoon shade and where it will be easy for you to water as needed. It is not diseased at all - just stressed from lack of water and excessive sun and heat. You don't really need YouTube (and yes, most pruning videos are garbage) to tend to this plant. Just remove the dead wood as I indicated - back to a healthy growth point and not leaving any stubs. That is ALL the pruning that is required!...See MoreNeed help with Japanese maple
Comments (5)Possibly 'Ryusen'. Possibly 'Jiro Shidare'. Or possibly just another bright green palmate leafed JM with a lot of recent growth that is producing a somewhat cascading appearance. The habit really doesn't have the very pronounced weeping of the two former possibilities....See MoreNeed help ID'ing Japanese Maple cultivar
Comments (2)Although I rarely go out on a limb to ID any cultivar of JM - even the Acer palmatum experts are reluctant to be too specific due to the similarities between many of the cultivars - this one is rather straightforward :-) It is Acer japonicum and I'd strongly suspect the cultivar 'Aconitifolium'....See Moremoochinka
