Thanks for your reply. Just to clear a few things up. The fluorescent isn't standard, but a 2ft "grow tube" I bought from a hydro shop. The light it gives off has a purple tinge. Looks like I'll be getting a metal halide as the fluoro gives off no heat at all. You mention it is not a good idea to keep cactus growing during the winter. So if I did purchase a Metal Halide light this should be turned off during the winter and only used throughout the warmer months? Where I live day temps are about 70F max during the winter with night temps of 30F. Summer day temps are as high as 120F, this is where I wouldn't need the halide lamp? I'm finally getting somewhere now. :)

I am rediscovering my love for the garden - health problems kinda turned my green thumb brown, but I am determined to have the land of hummingbirds again. This year I have a newly aquired pomegranate tree - so excited!! And we have coral honeysuckle, bearded tongue, larkspur, butterfly bush, gardenia, foxglove, moss rose, balsam (indian touch me not), creeping jenny, balloon flower, salvia, petunias, lava oxalis, jade trees, coral palm trees, mickey mouse cactus, ice plants, dianthis, lotus plants, water lily, flag iris, dutch iris, bearded iris, lily of the valley, and allysum. Veggies and herbs - we have german pink tomato, german yellow tomato, better boy tomato, sweet 100 tomato, celebrity tomato, mercury red pepper, dill, six different basils, sage, rosemary, catmint, and parsley. It's a pretty good start for a new beginning - already have hummingbirds buzzing my head while I have my coffee in the morning. Anybody going to the Mid TN swap or the East TN swap?
