True, don't have to divide the Siberian iris often, but dividing bearded iris is pretty much a given necessity (at least it's a very easy task, since the rhizomes are right at the surface). I know Siberian are supposed to be divided every five years or so but cr*p that is going to be work!! Those clumps get really well-rooted and big - that is the sort of job I remind my husband is the reason I need a man around LOL!! But after almost 18 years of marriage and about 10 with the iris, I have not once had my Siberian divided, and they still flower :0)

Spurias need dividing much less often than tall bearded irises. I also find that the newer TB introductions that are very tall seem to grow a bit more slowly, and I avoid anything that is older and described as "vigorous" and is also a rebloomer- like Grandma's Purple Flag. I could not keep up with that iris. I planted it at my neighbor's :) I like iris foliage, and mine do not die back. I just pull out the yellow and brown leaves. Maybe it's because we have to water year-round here in California- they stay green. Here's what they looked like last week: Renee

Yes, they will grow here. They come up fairly early, but are pretty while they last. They aren't a rhizome like a regular bearded iris, but instead are bulbs and will multiply. I had some in my garden a few years ago, but took them out because I had placed them in the wrong place and the bushes grew, so they got hidden. You know how it is - learn as you go.
