Annabelle hydrangea-- black leaves, wilting (pics)

Help!

We planted three Annabelles on the East side of my house in the fall. All three came back like gangbusters in early spring, but now two of the three have tons of black leaves, all the new growth wilted and died-- I'm sad.

Here is a pic. I already pruned a lot, but you can see what we are dealing with here:



For comparison, here is the third. The picture of health!


We have had a cold, rainy stretch in the Chicago 'burbs, which is when the black and wilt began. Is this root rot or...? If I rip them out and replace them, do I need to do anything to the spot? That is to say, are there any organisms in there that are killing them that I need to treat before I replace?

Any ideas or diagnosis or thoughts would be much appreciated thank you!
