Backsplash Advice
Comments (14)Thanks for the responses, everyone! @northcarolina I hadn't thought about removing the existing backsplash. I was worried that the removal of that would damage the drywall and necessitate extra money to repair the wall first. We removed an identical backsplash in the bathroom, and chunks of plaster came off with it, since it was glued to the wall. I'm glad everyone thinks that the kitchen doesn't scream gut job. Perhaps I've been watching too much HGTV in which first time home buyers react with horror to any cabinets that aren't custom and wood. I remember being pretty shallow and impressed with surface things like SS appliances and possibly a flashy backsplash. Honestly that was my reasoning. I would enjoy it, but it of course would not be essential. There are certainly other things we could do with $500 - tuck pointing, for instance! I recognize that doing a backsplash is pretty frivolous. We just have young children and I want to sell the house fast and worry in this bad market that it will sit for a while with this kitchen. Sadly, the house next to us, which is identical, sold for $15,000 less than ours WITH a new kitchen (albeit a really cheap remodel for a flip). I guess that has made me paranoid. The walls, however, are filthy at the moment. Maybe I'm just a messy cooker. But I guess instead of spending hundreds on a backsplash, we could just use high gloss paint behind there. I like the idea of a focal point mosaic in one color, just behind the stove. I had actually thought of that before, but not just the one color idea. This would be cheaper and still give me something fun and unique to install in an otherwise pretty standard kitchen. Thanks again!...See Morebacksplash indecision reigns supreme - need advice
Comments (22)Thanks for the compliments! We purchased both tiles from www.glasstilestore.com. The glass tile is the 1x1 Harvest Gold mosaic (although the picture online looks greenish to me) and the 2x4 Jerusalem gold is found under their Marble Mosaics category. The price was much less than what we would have paid at the tile stores around here for the same thing. They will send out samples for $5. and they shipped pretty quick. I know it is an agonizing decision Anna_2006! I actually posted to the decorating forum to get feedback on our original idea which was a black subway tile...I was afraid it was going to be too dark or dramatic and after taking into consideration all the comments, and doing a mock-up, we came to the same conclusion. One of the posters at that time (sorry, don't remember who!) actually suggested Jerusalem Gold because they had found, after much searching, it was one of the few tiles that really worked for their busy granite. For whatever reason, I did not follow up on that suggestion but I should have! After several more weeks of agonizing and money spent for sample after sample, I did see it online and ordered the sample. When it came, we knew right away it was the right one. I like it because it doesn't compete with the granite and yet, because it is polished, it has a little glow and bling of its own. Zobeet's pictures seem to confirm as well that Jerusalem Gold does work well for some of those busy granites with the golden tones so you may want to check it out. Be warned though...it wasn't easy then choosing a PAINT color!!! and I am still not quite satisfied with the paint I have now...sigh...sometimes it doesn't end... Comments (48)This is glass tile from Fireclay Tile in Jasmine. It comes in matte and gloss in the same color and would look great with your cabinets and stones. It's shown in 2" x 8" here but available in other sizes as well, and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Below it is their ceramic tile in Shell, also available in many shapes and sizes. I know you're looking primarily at glass, but the ceramic tile has some beautiful color variations and crazing and would lighten things up a bit. Comments (15)Thanks for all the comments so far. I will admit some of the remaining issues I may not have noticed much if the overall job had been better to start. However it was initially much worse- this is the improved version after the most obvious stuff has been fixed. So in all fairness there may be some of the whole, "once you notice it, it stands out more" scenario going on. That being said, given there are so many remaining little issues (below are a few more examples, but still not all) is why I'm still leaning towards asking for further repairs or a re-do. I'd welcome any further thoughts though. (I really do want to be reasonable.) Is it really unreasonable to want to be satisfied with something so "in your face every day" after spending hundreds of thousands though? Plus as London Staging and Design, LLC mentioned, the tile being an issue at re-sell is also a very real concern. Oh, for those that mentioned the tile was a poor selection- we didn't pick the tile. The tile wasn't up, but was already selected by the builder by the time we put an offer on the house. Thanks again....See MoreRelated Professionals
