The weed that doesn't die
Comments (6)One of my favorite books, now passed on to a horticultural library, concerned farming in MA during the Civil War. Several pages are devoted to eradicating this thistle which always has been a costly, troublesome weed. The 'solution' then was to mow grasslands in the fall to a height of about 6" which left the hollow centers of each thistle exposed to the winter elements which killed the plant. Based on this writing and years of experimenting when living in Yankee land, I dealt with the thistle by cutting each stalk back to about 3" in height during active late spring growth and placing 2 drops of clorox into the exposed hollow stem. Clorox keeps on working and will slowly kill the extensive root system. Patience! Hand pull the weed near your prized tree as even a single drop of clorox is effective for quite a radius around a treated plant. And, if the decision is made to use no chemicals then remove each thistle, cutting below soil surface. Repeat until root system dies off. Try using a linoleum knife as a "down on the knees" weeding tool. Most effective weed controller I have in my gardening tool kit....See MoreAm I the only person who doesn't like granite??
Comments (74)After this was posted the first time I got to thinking that maybe I should have picked something else for my counters. (I'm a marketing grad and still the biggest second guesser of all my buying decisions). My mom is redoing her kitchen and I was taking her around to a variety of places one of which was our counter place. They sell granite, marble and silestone products. I was surprised when my mom said she wanted to look at the silestone products and when I asked why (as I'm drooling over the granite) she said she found the granite too busy. I was shocked> We went and looked at the silestone which they had in slabs and she fell in love with the coolness and the calmness of the stone. I, on the other found them to be cold and boring. She walked through the silestone aisles and I went back to the granite aisles and we were both happy. That's why there are choices out there - none are right or wrong just what is right for each of us. This visit confirmed that the granite was right for us....See Morestain doesn’t look like what we picked out with builder
Comments (23)Pine is soft wood, so the softer areas of the wood will absorb more stain in comparison to the harder areas and the results could have a huge color variation. Before staining pine the wood must be conditioned to avoid what grain reversal. Using wood conditioner helps to achieve a more even finish. It's a process when staining pine and if you skip the necessary prep steps and just apply stain to the raw wood you can end up with dark blotches....See Morewalnut veneer kitchen cabinets
Comments (26)I had cabinets made by a local cabinetmaker and he used SW precat lacquer. He sprayed 3 coats. It has been 8 years and the cabinets are in a rental and the finish is a little scratched around a couple knobs But otherwise perfect. same guy does high end homes around the lake. With the same products as he used on mine. I think your cabinetmaker either used old finish (it has short shelf life), forgot how many coats and just did one or something else....equipment failure or drunk?...See Moredivotdiva2
