Adding an exhaust/vent fan to an existing bathroom - help!
Comments (5)You can get a low profile fan that will fit within the space. I have a powder room on the first floor and chose the Panasonic WhisperFit Lite to go there. It fits nicely and is ducted right out the nearby side wall. The WhisperFit is designed with the motor on the inside of the fan, rather than sticking out the top. In my situation the fan was a replacement for an old, LOUD f-fan. I used rigid duct wrapped in foil-faced fiberglass insulation. The Panasonic fans (and maybe other brands) are designed to allow you to mount the body and secure it before the fan itself is inserted into the body. This gives you more room to work. The fan I chose is 60 CFM, if I remember right. In my small powder room, this is enough ventilation that dust will roll across the floor when the door is closed. I installed a timer instead of a switch, which keeps me from forgetting that it's on. If you don't need one with a light, just look for the WhisperFit series. They can be found on eBay. I would assume that you could branch the electrical circuit from the existing fan to this new one for the simplest hookup. Then both would run at the same time....See Morebathroom vent fans
Comments (2)Yes, you can wire them separately. I advise putting the fan on a timer and the light on a different switch. The timer I used was Leviton 611-6230M that has presets for 5, 10, 15, and 30 seconds. We use the short times to clear out bad smells and the 30 minutes during/after a shower. You can get other models with different preset times. Sorry, I don't recall which ventilation fan models we bought, but I am very happy with them....See Morebathroom vent fan cover
Comments (2)Well, our electrician recommended Panasonic (apparently they are the most quiet) so we already installed the fan, but your suggestion inspired me to look for different Panasonic models and while doing that, I ran into this grille accessory, which looks a lot more attractive than what we have now. So thanks for helping out. Here is a link that might be useful: Panasonic vent fan antique grille...See MoreDo all the gas tankless have power vents if no direct vent possib
Comments (1)Welcome, Original Poster, At the risk of being misunderstood, I am unsure what the relationship is with the WH power vent, the range hood and the guest bathroom. However, if there is a problem with the Rheem unit, or two even, and the unit is under warrantee, you have a cost-free solution waiting for you. You mention, "this new Rheem," which means the manufacturer will make good for the noisy exhaust and the faulty device. You need only to contact them. Also, if a venting location is an issue, you might consider using an electric unit. With a large house and fairly new, you should have all the electrical capability you need to choose that. But I would stay with what you have, or larger. If you have other questions about the venting, please reply. If you enjoy poetry, reply too. Pinoke...See Morebusybee3
