Suggestions for slide in or freestanding smoothtop electric range
Comments (9)Thank you all for your ideas. I tried to talk DD into induction b/c that is what I have and love. She wants to stick to the electric smoothtop b/c it will be less expensive and she thinks induction is still a niche market. When I chose induction it was for a variety of reasons---DH and I want to age in place and I think the induction has features that make it safer for older folks, the responsiveness of the burners, and the ease of cleanup. The ease of cleanup may be my favorite feature now. DH actually for the first time in over 30 years of marriage will clean up the cooktop without being poked with a sharp stick. Same for DS when he visits. DD likes the induction features but as she doesn't cook much she is fine with electric. Also, it's funny to watch DS and his techie friends play with the induction and think it is just the coolest gadget. DD and friends are sort of "meh" about it. Thus, DD thinks when resale time comes around for her that the extra money spent on induction won't be worth it. What does appeal to her about a slide in is the point xand83 makes about how pots and pans sit on rear burners. She hates how that happens on her current range and thinks that if she had small children she would want to use the rear burners more often but be limited spacewise. She is now thinking that if she pays more for the slide in that would be worth it. Buehl, thanks for the endorsement on the GE Profile. That's is the brand that DD thinks has most of the features she thinks are important. Do you have any trouble keeping the cooktop clean? My only experience with the black glass smoothtop was in a rental we were in for over a year due to the 2005 hurricane season wipeout of our house. I can't remember the brand---maybe a Whirlpool or a Maytag---but I struggled with that thing. Although it was basically brand new it never looked good to me and I'm not OCD but fairly careful about spills and cleaning regularly. Are all smoothtops created equal in cleanability?...See MoreFreestanding range with deeper base cabinets
Comments (12)My 2 cents fwiw: all the many range specs I've reviewed never showed a recessed range. As weedmeister said, this is probably due to fire hazard. Most freestanding gas range sheets (you don't say what range you're getting) have a minimum distance from the wall and still butt out some. I don't know about electric ranges. When I prep and toss the meat and veggies in the waiting pan it's one single move sideways. I'd probably be the one who, if I had to move forward toward the range, would trip on a corner, open space or countertop surface end and land something on the cooking service other than food. Flush with cabs sounds better. Also for resale reasons if ever needed. jmho....See MoreFreestanding to slide-in range?
Comments (15)Most of the slide ins that I have seen are the same depth overall as a freestanding range, however, the top of the range normally stops a few inches from the rear of the oven, so that there would be a few inches of countertop behind the top of the range at the rear. To crl, while I agree with the answers by dan, not sure why you would want a slide in later. Typically, you have less selection than freestanding ranges, and usually the price is more expensive than a similarly equipped free standing range from the same manufacturer. Jenn Air offers quite a few slide in ranges, but the ones I have seen have the exhaust vent to the floor, so it requires modification to the space if you are currently using a free standing range....See Moreretrofitting slide-in range into a freestanding space
Comments (17)Well I looked at the pictures of my new place and it actually does NOT have that short piece of granite, rather the tile backsplash goes all the way to the counter so I'm somewhat optimistic that they just ran the tile straight across behind the freestanding range. Won't know until I move in next week. I have been looking at a KitchenAid slide in that has an optional 6" matching backsplash that can be installed with the range. So I'm thinking this may work. I need to measure everything once I get in there but I'm optimistic at this point. I looked at freestanding ranges last night and I just don't want that look....See Morejzaetz77
