Taxes while building a house w/ GC
Comments (1)I would do them myself. Unless you have some other reason for needing assistance (lots of complicated stock sales, etc.) I don't think there is any added complexity that would warrant using an accountant for someone that has done their own in the past. DH's accountant actually UNDER calculated our refund by $6k the first year we were married (the year we started construction on our house). I've been doing them every since (I always did my own before that)....See MoreState sales tax deduction
Comments (6)Like spewey, I live in a state with no state income tax. We do have a sales tax of 8.4% to 8.6% (depending on the county). So, for us, it's a no-brainer. I saved all of our sales receipts this year because we finished out basement and bought some big ticket items. It's tedious. I clip them together and try periodically to add up groups of them. Then I put them in an envelope, rubberband it together and write the total on the outside of the envelope. So far I have about 6 envelopes and another stack to add up. But the total is way over the amount the table give us....See MoreSales Tax Scamming
Comments (7)Thanks for the link! As it turns out, apparently contractors can charge a contractors tax rate and not separate the contract out into materials and labor charges. I called the Arizona Department of Revenue though and they said while this is correct, that the contractor is only allowed to charge sales tax on 65% of the gross contract amount. I was charged tax on 100% of the contract price... I'm trying to get ahold of the sales manager at my PB to get this straightened out. The next section (603) at that link you provided had the information I'm talking about....See MoreNew build tax incentives
Comments (8)If you claim the sales tax as a Fed deduction you can't deduct your state income tax but where there is no state income tax you can claim the sales tax but you must pay it yourself or at least appear to. Paying it to a contractor doesn't qualify. Carefully document those expenses and how they are paid to meet the arcane Fed tax rules....See MoreRelated Professionals
