what is this brown stuff in my salt water tank?
Comments (1)Sounds Like Diatoms. Is it a brown flakey sludge easilly stirred up? Diatoms is very common in a new aquarium both salt and freshwater. It is not nice to look at for sure but shouldn't do any harm, exception If it is a very heavy coating. On live rock it could block high light requirments as well as the coral. It should easily "wash" away. The cause is silicate leaching into the water from your new tank, any plastic or glass equiptment (silicone caulk, heaters filters pumps etc.) Usually when the silicate all leaches out (a few weeks to 6 months, varies with water chemistry and tap water) it will disappear. Silicate is the food source so when its gone it starves. Check nitrate levels also. Do a search on the web for brown algae or diatoms for a more detailed explanation and cure. www.about.com has some good ones, as well as alot of info for saltwater and fresh water aquariums also www.reefcentral.com...See Moregreen stuff in my shpagnum top soil dressing????? wtf?

Comments (10)Oh man! I am so sorry for the delayed response I have never posted anything and thought that an email would be sent to me whenever someone followed up (I thought I clicked that option!)...anyway, I have tried to take pics of it but the egg-like thingies are so darn small that it only shows like a uniform white thing on them...I also looked it up on line and no pics or descriptions like mine anywhere...I will try to photograph it again today and see if I can come up with something somehow decent. Thanks for trying to help me jean001, I truly appreciate it....See MoreHELP! My iris has this creamy brown stuff on it!
Comments (1)That slimy gooey stinky mess is bacterial soft rot caused by to much moisture over an extended period. Best to dig up the rhizome, cut off the affected area and let it sun dry to scab over. The rhizome may be to far gone now and you'll want to concentrate on saving the increase growing along the sides, since this looks like a bloom stalk that rotted. Some people put a mild solution of clorox bleach on the wound. If it wasn't so bad, it could be scraped out with a spoon and then apply comet cleanser, whatever, that area has to dry out....See MoreAnnie N
