Back from Cape Cod Vaca, thanks for tips!
Comments (1)First -- many congrats on the A+! Very impressive, you little over-achiever you! I'm so glad to hear your trip was a success. It certainly was well-deserved. I can;t wait to get back to the Cape in a few weeks. I always go to Chatham, on the "elbow." I've seen most of the Cape several times, but have never explored the Hyannis area. I think I will this time and also take a ferry over to Martha's Vineyard for a day. I'd also like to poke around Sandwich, too. Of coure, I want to loll on the beach, too! I may have to stay an extra week. I either stop in Mystic or Stonington on the way up or back. I like to drive through Newport and take the drive around Ocean Drive. So glad to hear the doggies did well. So sorry to hear that school starts soon, although I think you secretly like it since you are excelling! Glad you are safely home....See MoreCape Cod house window size dilemma
Comments (35)Can we assume those are basement stairs you enter by the back door? You might steal some of the head space at the east end of those so you could put an oven/micro tower there recessed just a bit so it doesn't close off that end of the kitchen. Then you can move the fridge to the right by the window and put a gas cooktop and hood right of the dish washer. I would do a straight run of lower cabinets on the wall with drawers. One set left of the sink, doors under the sink, w/d, then cooktop with drawers underneath, then a pullout utensil cabinet, and another set of drawers next to the fridge which will have shifted into the dining area. The wall of pantry from the back entry to the oven/micro tower will complete the south side of your drawing. If you prefer a range, then you'd just lose the drawer storage but could make it up by extending the 12" pantry further into the dining space. Drawers under gas cooktop Utensil pullout A variation on these would extend all along the south wall or could stop to allow for a tower for an oven and micro and the dining end....See MoreBrick Cape Cod Exterior Trim Paint Suggestions
Comments (8)I don’t like the look of cedar posts on this style house at all. I think a creamy off-white would look lovely … with the brick, roof, everything. The front door could be any color you like with these neutrals. For the lower level, I’d match a color from the brick as close as possible. I’d consider removing the shutters from the wider window. Freshen up the landscape and add nice porch furniture. The entry could be very welcoming!...See MoreExtending Porch on Cape Cod Style Home
Comments (2)@JP L First thank you for taking the time to respond and offer feedback as well as thoughtful questions. In terms of how far we would extend the porch, we are flexible. I like the 3rd photo very much (and if budget would allow I would even add the "bump out" they have and turn it into a mudroom. However, I'm not sure our budget will allow that considering the other work we are doing inside. In that case, I would extend the porch as far as needed to make it look good - possibly the entire width of that side? What are your thoughts? You are correct - we have a basement. It's a fully finished walk out basement, and those 2 windows (adjacent to the chimney) are in the basement. The make-shift tiny roof is covering one of the windows. We are assuming that was built in order to help water run away from that window. It can be removed. Extending the porch would likely help with drainage on that side of the house. The downside of extending the porch is that it would cover those 2 windows (which are in the basement playroom). However, honestly those 2 windows offer very little light; in part due to that little makeshift window cover and also because of the heavy tree cover surrounding the house the majority of the year. So little light comes in that we don't think functionally it would matter if we lost the windows. We are adding lots of overhead lighting in the basement as part of the whole-home remodel. Let me know if you have any questions and I appreciate your feedback!...See Morefishymom
