Plain mirror vs mirror medicine cabinet above a Ikea double-bowl sink

Hi all,

I'm going to gut down my master bathroom in June but am still not decisive on putting up a plain mirror or mirror medicine cabinets above a Ikea ODENSVIK 120cm (47") double sinks. I have a few options in mind:

1. Two Kohler Verdera 38cm (15") by 76cm (30") medicine cabinet, single door, so that each one can be placed centered with each bowl.

2. One Kohler Verdera 101cm (40") by 76cm (30") medicine cabinet, three folded doors. More storage space but it is 7" shorter than the sink, won't completely covered both bowls.

3. Pottery Barn Pivot mirror (40" x 24")

More details about the bathroom:

1. The walls of the bathroom will be tiled from floor to ceiling with white subway (6cmx24cm);

2.Contractor don't suggest installing recessed mirror cabinet because that is an exterior wall and the cold climate of Montreal;

3. Height of the bathroom is 8ft. The Ikea Godmorgon mirror cabinet is 37" height which seems too tall. I am worry that the 47" vanity and this tall mirror (47"x37"x5 1/2") may looks too heavy on my tiny bathroom (11ft x 6ft).

Any thought please?

We put a tall frameless mirror in our small master bathroom and I think it makes the space look bigger. I opted for a mirror rather than a surface mount medicine cabinet. We have a fair bit of storage space in our vanity and are fine without the medicine cabinet.

I had a pair of the Kohler Verdera medicine cabinets installed over the sinks in my bath remodel. They are recessed. They look great and the magnifying mirror hidden inside is wonderful.

When you're both getting ready, are you both using the sink? For me, I would prefer the single sink with storage over a narrow double pedestal with less storage. While I do have a double sink and I like having it, I would like it a whole lot less if I did not have enough counter space or storage. We rarely are both using the sinks at the same time. I just enjoy being able to have a more pristine sink that's "mine" even though we are usually not both using sinks at the same time.

I used 4 similar sconces (Restoration Hardware Double Sutton) in my master and replaced the included incandescent light bulbs with round 40W LED bulbs because I was worried about heat and electricity usage. I'm very happy with the effect - cool, probably brighter though not as warm a glow. My contractor thought 3 sconces would have been enough, but I am happy with 4. I put in 2 75W LED can lights over the vanity, which though bright, cast facial shadows since they were located too far from the wall (10" vs. 4"- 6") - look a little ghoulish at 60+ years of age. We had above mirror makeup lights which I loved, so I would recommend horizontal above mirror lights for your situation. My RH medicine cabinets have 2 halogen lights, so sometimes I use just them to put on makeup, and they do run a little hot. I just don't put on makeup that often. We are redoing master bath in home made of cement blocks (it's in FL) and double vanity is placed on outside wall--and there are pocket doors on either side so can't do side-installed ones--can't recess the medicine cabinets w/o BIG expense... We are going with framed-out medicine cabinets in same style as the vanity-- they will project from the wall but since we are going w/more traditional style don't think it will be that out of place... We can't just frame the wall out above the vanity to allow for a recessed look- I asked about that but it would mean pushing the vanity out further from its current depth into the small space-- We love medicine cabinets and would love to have them in our TX house but the counters in bathroom are too deep (poor design IMO) and too tall... we have wall mounted mirrors above those vanities... Personally having medicine cabinets recessed to align w/wall mounted mirror would be ideal to me--lots of reflective light-- and you can get the pressure open-close doors so you don't need knob

Natal-It's the large Cartwright we are considering. Thanks for the additional info. re: the width. That may or may not help. In my last post I included a pic. that shows my main dilema which is a wall the butts right up against one side of the vanity. I will also try a mock up but I was just wanting to weigh my options since I don't have much faith in being able to use the side sconces.

that's what I'm thinking too crl_, a mirror will be ideal but I need spaces to put toothbrushes, razor, small stuff...

The recess cabinet would be an excellent choice too only if I can install it. It will provides me the storage space while keeping the look clean.

All of those small things go in our vanity drawers. Our vanity is 18 inches deep and 48 inches wide--custom built by our GC who used to be a cabinet maker. Ours is shared by two people and we have enough room. I don't know how much storage space there is in the IKEA vanity you are using though.

Can you mock up what the mirror and vanity will look like - use some painters tape to indicate where in the room the vanity will end and then outline the various choices of mirror/mirror cabinets. You might be surprised at how some work better than others.

With the Kohler Verdera 101cm (40") by 76cm (30") medicine cabinet, it doesn't matter if it's 7" shorter than the sink - what matters is if you are using the sink to wash up, and you look up - are you able to see yourself properly in the mirror? IOW, is it functional.
