Can you describe its colors and size (body size, not legs). Fingernail, thumbnail, etc. Some Argiope genus spiders pose with leg pairs close together, making it look like fewer than 8 legs from a distance.

And it is not poisonous or jumping, so perhaps you can take a closer picture.

Thank you for your help. It is sort of high up in a corner, so it was hard for me to get close enough to get a good shot. I will try again today. It is not all that big, the body size is maybe little-finger fingernail size

The argiopes typically make those pretty, symmetrical webs...not the disorganised nest shown above.

My first reaction was that it's one of the widows, brown or black. They will often hang in their nest wiith their legs arranged in a manner to appear that they have fewer than their 8.

The widows are very common in the south, but aren't in the least aggressive. If you can get an improved picture, it will be easy to ID.

It looks like there are two round eggs in the web. Black widows have white eggs with small protrusions all around.

Black widows have smooth egg sacs; brown widows have the spiky ones.

Mine were always spikey whether they were black or brown or striped. I've killed over 60 so far.

From what I can tell from the photo, this is an American House Spider(Parasteatoda tepidariorum), which, in spite of the common name, are often found outdoors. This is one of our most common spider species in SC. They are harmless, although their webs are messy if indoors, and they often feed on other spiders. They are in the same family as the Widows(Latrodactus sp.), but do not have medically significant venom, and I've never even known one to bite. They just curl up and drop from their webs like a pebble if disturbed.
