Depends upon how old/big the plants you intend to plant are. Many perennials do not reach their potential in the blooms until the plants are mature (3'ish years) and/or the plants are of sufficient size. Obviously this varies but it is a general rule of thumb. FataMorgana

Lavender needs sun to be healthy, and given their full size, you usually see them outside. Some lavender varieties are more cold hardy than others, as the Web search will reveal. My lavender during winter is in shades, such as beneath the snow. It is the cold temperature that enables them to tolerate lack of sun (indoor temp and no sun will not do). I live in zone 6. I keep some lavender in well draining containers, albeit sheltered from wind by the house, and most live through the freezing cold season. Others live in the ground, where their roots enjoy more stability. A lavender from seed is not likely to flower for a while, though some varieties advertise they do on the first year. Cuttings are more likely to flower the first year. Either way it does not matter since a three year old lavender is much bigger than a first year, and will have many more blooms.

Thanks so much everyone! I;m sorry it took me F O R E V E R to finally post a follow up (very busy all last month). Soâ¦I plucked off the buds (most of them) and made a few lovely small sachets and also infused some to try a soap idea I have. Now, a month later, there appears to be even more small blooms occurring again - so thrilled! I'm in the process of repotting it into a much bigger container (yes I know this is WAY past due for my poor but seemingly quite strong lavender!)⦠I just have one question before proceeding: what type of potting soil would be best? I know it needs it to be more alkaline than normal plants but how do i go about getting it that way? Is regular Espoma potting soil with some "desert sand" mixed in good enough? Should I add some egg shells to it too? Or not? All help is very appreciated! Thanks so much!

LOL!! Of course lavender blooms.........ALL lavenders!! Otherwise, there would be no way for the plant to reproduce and it would have died off eons ago!! The "resident expert" is no expert at all and is just wrong. Every plant flowers in its own way to produce fruit and seed so it can procreate its species. That is just basic botany :-)) Depending on the species, your lavender may just bloom later in the season. And it does require the conditions outlined previously in this very old thread - as much sun as possible, lean but very well-drained soil, little to no fertilization and just enough water to keep alive. Give it that and it will bloom for you eventually.
