Can you post a picture?

i think that you may confusing getting top growth with root growth. just because a cutting sprouts new top growth, that is not an indication that roots have developed...all it means is that the cuttings is getting enough water to support leaf growth, and that could be coming up through the stem, even without roots, like a cut rose in a vase..it's a good sign, but leave them under glass for a while longer. you didn't say how long ago you stuck the cuttings, but my guess is that you don't have roots quite yet..hang in there...donna

Thanks for the explanation. I did not realize the pics were of two different roses. Some comments: 1) re possible sucker - I would not do anything until it blooms and you can decide exactly what it is - it might be a new basal cane from Don Juan, which is exactly what you want! 2) Rose number two might also be Don Juan. 3) Same advice for rose #2 - move those concrete things at least 24-25 inches away from the rose, and mulch. 4) I would tie any long canes as horizontally as you can on to that fence, then let the roses alone for a season and see what they do (of course you need to water them and feed with a rose FOOD ONLY, following the directions). 5) Personally, I would not worry about a bit of blackspot. Neglected roses sometimes get fungal diseases when they are not getting enough water. However, if it gets worse, I would spray with Bayer Advanced Disease Control. You are doing a great job - please post more pictures as your roses come into full bloom Jackie

Can you dig it up and transplant it into the ground somewhere else in the same day? If so, that would be best. I just suggested a pot in case you are not able to put it in its new home for a few weeks. Make sure you dig the hole it is to go into before you dig it up. Make the hole bigger than you think it needs to be. Then as I said, cut back the rose to maybe 2-3 feet tall. Dig a trench around it which is at least 2 feet from the base of the rose, and dig down to get as large a root ball (with the dirt - leave the dirt with it). I then plunk them into a wheel barrow so I can move them. Once you plant it into its new hole, water it well. Check it to make sure it gets enough water for at least a month (if it is pouring rain, do not worry about watering it). Do NOT feed it or spray it until AFTER it starts putting out new growth, which may take a while, because the first thing it will do it grow roots underground, so you will think it is "just sitting there not doing anything". Wrong - it is growing roots, in order to survive. Good luck!
