Friend or foe? Mystery plant in my flower bed
Comments (13)The plant actually started appearing under the metal bar, and we shifted the bar out of the middle of it. As for the bar, it was slated for disposal and then became a garden ornament. This picture was taken last year, and notable doesn't have any of these little bulblets ... I guess I'll just have to wait and see what it grows into ... I'd love it to be a native lily; that would be really pretty. Anything could have been bird planted by something sitting in red maple or lilacs. Last year we had a blackberry lily randomly appear amongst the daylilies - a pleasant surprise. (I know it's neither native nor a lily, but neither are the daylilies). I just hope this is another welcome volunteer....See MoreFriend or foe?
Comments (17)Floral you have a good eye for plants not native to the British Isles! I saw a funny picture on the web years ago: at some botanical garden in the UK is a Toxicodendron sp. in a wrought iron cage. If you cut junk or invasive plants at the base, you ought to treat them to stay dead or else you will be back to cut them again, and again, and again. My preferred method is a commercial glyphosate diluted to 25% and mixed with a bit of surfactant and blue dye for marking purposes. Bring a 3/8" inch drill, dental irrigation syringe and herbicide solution to "job site". Drill hole in cut stems and fill with the dyed "roundup" solution - aiming for at least 1.5" deep. Guaranteed to work as long as there's no rain to wash it out in 24h. Dose roughly as follows: anything < 1 inch, 1 hole, 1-4 inches diameter, 1-1.5 holes per inch diameter around the edge, > 4 inches diameter, a hole every 2-3 inches along the outer edge. (hopefully you didn't let the weed tree get that big!)...See MoreID, please. Friend or Foe?
Comments (4)It looks like it could be Viburnum dentatum, Southern Arrowhead Viburnum. They aren't any trouble. Their leaves can be skeletonized by the larvae of a certain leaf beetle, (Pyrrhalta viburni). The link gives a couple other similar Viburnum options. https://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/trees/plants/south_arrow.html...See MoreOnline Used Furniture Consignment: Friend or Foe?
Comments (3)We have a used furniture store in my smallish town. They buy out of estates in local higher-end communities. I have gotten several great deals there (with free delivery!). You do have to kiss a lot of frogs. See if you can find a couple of those kinds of places in your area, make friends with the owners, and let them know what you are willing to wait for. Visit frequently. Good luck! And, coincidentally, one of my buys was also a Palecek chair. My upholster recovered for $35!...See Moresam_md
