troy bilt bronco riding mower with a smoking problem and shredded belt

I have a Troy Built bronco with an automatic transmission and I shredded a drive belt today. I've noticed that going up the hill it seems to lose power like its slipping and I've been told the autos don't like hills. This is a problem because my house is right in the middle of a hill and there is really no way to mow with out climbing.

It looks like there are just two pulleys to wrap the belt around and if that's the case I can do that but is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? Do they make better belts?

Also when I got the mower (I inherited it from my late grandfather-in-law) it was smoking pretty bad. I pulled the cover and looked around and couldn't find a leak anywhere. The oil level is perfect and I mowed 3 times with no smoke. Today when I started it it smelled back and was smoking off the top of the muffler. It looked like oil was dripping off the bottom of the case but I can't see where its coming from. Any ideas?
