Regilded Ormolu Fittings on Cocktail Table

So, I am waiting for handy guy to come and help with party preparations for tomorrow, and I notice again that the ormolu fittings on our wood and marble cocktail table in the living room are getting duller and duller. After a cursory google search i learn this is because they are not brass as I have always assumed but gilding on bronze, and that the brass polish they have been subjected to over the years has practically ruined them. I have no more gold rub 'n buff (one of my fsvorite decorative messes to make) but by chance i have a small bottle of liquid gold gilding! Cloth in hand, i experiment on one leg and after about 30 minutes i've hit the highlights of these relief surfaces and it looks----if not great-----at least 10 times better than the aged and dull metal of an hour ago.

Not much time or effort, but a big reward :-). My kind of project!

That looks great KSWL, you must be proud. Is it you that is always saying you are not crafty or DIY? LOL, I must disagree.

Ah...I see gold leaf and an ox hair brush in your future!

That is a noticeable improvement. Now aren't you glad there are only 4 legs?

    Me crafty!

Yes i am really glad there are only four legs. You cant see it in the photos but where the stringers of the four legs come together is this ormolu urn and i re-gilded that too :-)

Just waiting until path finished so we can wipe brick dust off everything...

TOMORROW! Tonight is our final concert of the year! And thirty minutes ago I had to dispatch handy guy (who is getting the brick dust off everything) to our office because the burglar alarm went off and the police were there. When. It. Rains.....

You did a great job KSWL. How did the party go?

The party was great! We had 95 people and our young parking attendants with flashlights and golf cart were prompt and attentive, the serving staff was (mostly) on the ball, all board members brought their food at the appointed time, the weather was fabulous, towards the end of the evening our fiddler brought out his instrument and played to a rapt audience, although he had competition from the tree frogs who were out In cacophonous force after sundown. Everything went perfectly!

Big surprise though--- almost everyone drank whiskey! I had enough wheat bear and pale ale for 72 people to have three each, enough wine for the entire town (because I can always add that back into our cellar) and we had a two half gallons of Jameson for Irish Mules. I thought perhaps 40 people might try one, put it down and get a beer or glass of wine...... Wrong-ola! People wanted to try one, then another and we ended up making a run to the liquor store 45 minutes after the party started!

I think this occurred because I used a lovely green toile notecard and wrote the recipe for the drink on it and propped it on the bar, not only for the bartender to learn, but so she wouldn't have to repeat the ingredients over and over. People stood at the bar, read the card and said, "I'll have one of those," and loved them. Had I not put that card out most people would probsbly have opted for beer or wine. So now I have about 180 bottles of beer left and I guess we will just have to have another party.

Most people left by 11:00 (hours were 7:30 to 10 pm), a few stayed until 11:30 and one who was engrossed in conversation with our houseguest stayed until 4:30 am. I toddled off to bed hours earlier, making sure they had flashlights to find her car. The next morning he was up and cheery in the kitchen making omelettes. We packed him off with a lunch and will evidently see him again in the near future, as he left both his glasses and his kilt here

Fabulous, KSWL, it sounds like a lovely evening.

Wow! What an amazing party. My folks used to have parties with music when I was growing up before we moved to Omaha when I was nine. I missed those wonderful parties.

Sounds like a fabulous party! When you go to bed and someone's still engrossed in conversation and doesn't mind, you know it's successful and everyone is happy. Liquor....you never know. And you're probably right about the recipe card.

We did have a great time. The cake was delicious, an almond flavored moist cake with almond buttercream icing. All over the perimeter of the cake were overlapping emerald green fondant shamrocks of all different sizes. There were claddagh designs on the cake and a celebratory message for the singers.

Our son made the trip up for Mother's Day from Florida after all, and my mom came down, so we had a lovely Sunday afternoon--- with leftovers :-)
