Just got my Hosta Journal!!!

A quick glance thru this wonderful publication looking at the photos and reading later... except when I got to page 66. There is an article called "What's in a Name", and they have a couple photos of h. 'Waiting in Vain' and h. 'You're So Vein'.

Did a quick web search to find where I could get 'You're So Vein', and the few places that had it gave it the characteristics of the other one. The article explains the reason for the name registration confusion (the delay between registering and posting the info online). One is a large gold and the other is a small dark green... both are very veiny looking.

I have the wannas for the little dark green one, but I don't see anyone selling it. It's a Tony Advent registration. I bought my 'Blue Mouse Ears' from him back in 2002.

Does anyone know where I could find one or even IF/when it will become available?

it used to be.. if you wanted favors... you had to wrap payment in a box of chocolate ... lol ...

I read the whole thing, it was amazing, I could not stop, and then later discovered there were more articles. That one and the other two prints, plus all the other good news from the AHS all for only $30 / year. I read several articles twice, should continue that. As a new member I got a $15 coupon to buy hostas at participating vendors like Naylor. Is there an option to read past Journals, I did not come across that yet. I remember someone wrote that we can not read on-line old printed versions (but can buy them), but there was another or more on-line versions I believe. (the AHS forum seems to be inactive?) I wish I could have a tree in my front yard, especially as pretty as this one. But as everyone knows, the simultaneously cretinous and vindictive co-op manager had mine chopped down and would not let me put in a pagoda dogwood in its stead. Enjoy your tree!

My hosta from Hallson's were still in the pip stage when they arrived a few weeks ago, so I didn't get the thrill of opening the greenery. I was thinking yesterday that I should line up my Hallson beauties and take a picture. They are all large leaved, full and healthy. bk

Just got Book of Little Hostas...

I have that book along with any other Hosta books available. I'm a person that gets inspired by the visual. I look though my books all the time either for an idea for some issue or just allow the book to 'speak' to me. I don't collect a lot of tiny or very small hostas but I do have some. I definitely got some ideas from looking at this book. I realized this year that keeping the mini's in pots is fine but in the long run more tricky for me in my climate. This year I created two more areas where the little ones could be in the ground (pictures attached). The second picture where the Buddha lives also had the little pagoda thing added inspired by a picture in the book. I do agree there could have been more identifying going on. The first picture brings these plants up higher to view as you walk by. It was partially inspired by the raised bed in the book although that one was made of wood and much higher and larger than this. This garden previously had a collection of blues and greens. This is one of the few areas of the garden without overhead watering. The plants here don't get so spotty from hard water. The places where the mini's and smalls are was full of plants similar to the size of Devon Green and Blue Wedgwood. It looks fine but I realized this year that using the contrast of size was pleasing to my eye.

It's not in their online catalog, and I want it, but not so much as to pay big bucks. I learned that years ago when I had to have L. Dividing Line, but the only place I could get it was OS from Mary Chastain for $100. And the only photo of it back then was one leaf in a tube from a leaf show. If this new one from Tony is as good as it looks in the Journal, it will show up for sale soon, so I'll just go eat those chocolates for now. ;-)

(edit) Forgot to say that several years later it went out for tc and when I saw a clump of it I didn't really care for it much. There was too much variation in the white strip that ran down the middle. Live and learn...

According to last year's hosta finder, Franc's, Jim's and Woodland have it. Woodland does not show it on their website, neither does Jim's and Franc's doesn't seem to have a website. But he has a telephone number - 563-255-8534

Thanks Scheetz. I'll wait for it to become more available. I have learned to be patient for some of these new intros. If they are really good growers, they will soon be more readily available, in larger sizes, and cost less. There was a time when I first began collecting hostas, that I would pay $60 for a 3.5" pot (plant plus shipping). No longer. I will wait.
