Staghorn Sumac as a Street Tree

A friend of mine lives in a small development that have tree lawns between the street and sidewalk. The tree lawns are very small though around 20 inches or so wide. My friend planted a pink flowering dogwood about 5 years ago in this space and it has since died. This does not surprise me as the soil in this area is crap (compacted clay)....now I know just from general observation that staghorn sumac grows extremely well in bad soil. I have seen them grow into nice sized trees when maintained as such. The thing is many people think they are poisonous....they confuse them with poison sumac. My friend considered my suggestion but he is concerned that people will freak when they see it. Should he plant one or is there something better out there? This is in zone 6 PA....the site is in full sun and there is a powerline about 20 feet right above this spot
