Wandering Jew or Moses-in-the-Cradle - Both or Neither?
Comments (8)Common names: I know Purple Heart as an outdoor flowering plant. As to the Plants in questions, group of Tradescantia, larger family of Commelinacae. I believe they include Tradescantia (common Wandering Jew, green tops, purple underneath); also comes in all green & green & white only (no purple). Then there's Setresea pallida: looks like a larger Wandering Jew, all purple (no green) sometimes fussy. Then there's Rhoeo (Moses in the Cradle or Boat), comes in green up top, purple below, also green & white w/ Pink highlights. (except Rhoeo) All of these root easily in water, make lovely hanging baskets as they like to trail when they get longer. Other than Rhoeo, they all take well to pinching to be kept full & lush. There's more varieties I'm sure, but these are the basics that I've seen around commonly in the last 30 yrs. since my college days (when I got to see what other folks wee growing)....See MoreI'm a thief :)
Comments (6)Kitty, I too have been knowing to snip a cutting, lol, but don't make a habbit out of it..though never 8"..lol..A leaf here if it were succulent.. Rhizo, maybe it depends where you live, but most clerks would not allow one to snip a piece..they'd insist you either buy the plant or No-way, Jose. There's a plant called Rhoeo, (Moses in the Cradle) that I hadn't seen for 15+ yrs and came across it at a nursery..It was on a separate table, w/o prices, and I was planning on purchasing the plant. I grabbed it, but not before my husband took a 3" cutting, went up to the clerk to ask its price, and he snatched it out of my hand, and sternly said, This plant is NOT for sale! He was utterly rude, which was uncalled for. This was about 8 yrs ago..I'm happy to say this baby is now over 2' tall w/many shoots..Had I asked this clerk for a cutting he probably would have told me to leave the store..this guy really had an attitude. So, even though, I'm really not a thief, I was happy my dh took the cutting.. Once we went to a smaller conservatory..nobody and I mean, not a soul was around..we could have walked out w/orchids, bromiliads, and an assortment of plant, but I wouldn't think of it..That IS stealing.. Kitty, I wish you luck w/your cutting. In one plant book I have, under propagating, it says, leave to the experts..lol..I'm sure w/TLC, you'll get it to root..If you have any camellia books, perhaps it gives info on rooting cuttings. Comments (5)Check the roots & see if they are OK. If they are rotten, you need to try & propagate it. Just dry it & stick it back in soil. You do not need rocks in your soil  just dry & well draining soil. The rocks might humidify the plant, possibly contributing to excess root moisture. Local commercial growers stick pups/cuttings in sphagnum, but you may not have that in your country. Sometimes they die back with cool temps, & moving it towards a cool window might have caused that. I had problems with some of these plants until I found the right location. Mine have done best in a deep pot, bright light, & afternoon sun. They have seemed to suffer a bit with the cooler temperatures, but then they start putting out pups....See MoreMoses in the cradle plant

When T. pallida fades, it fades on the bottom of leaves too.
