TCL Roku TV

I have a brand new TCL Roku TV (connected 2 days ago) that will not always power up; will not power off; stays at the home page, if you are so fortunate as to be able to watch two or three minutes of a selected program, the tv goes back to the home page and stays there. Anyone know how to turn a smart tv into a dumb tv? Thanks.

my Roku device works pretty well, but I had to replace the HDMI cord once. Check the connections and your cord. And maybe the Roku website for support. Maybe you have a bum device.

That's entirely possible, Violet. I have talked to the folks at TCL; they want me to ship it back to them at my expense (not going to happen). I will check the connections.

See? I knew this was the right forum. Excellent thoughts on both counts, especially re the download limits. I will check into that before jumping in. I'm thinking of switching to cable internet because when I do online speedchecks, I'm not getting anywhere near the "up to 3 Mbps" advertised. The connection often seems sluggish. My spousal unit uses the home connection to work evenings, so we'd benefit from more speed. Fairpoint, the New England rural phone company that took when Verizon bailed on rural service, does not offer FIOS. They talked big during the hand off from Verizon, but no one believed they would be able to lay down the fiber optics they promised and they haven't. Their customer service is terrible. I dream of FIOS. Thanks for the thoughtful input. Lenvt

Here’s what happened to my highly rated (at the time) Samsung curved screen, after just a few years. Drove me nuts so it’s been relegated to the basement for the kids. Bought another Samsung for some reason and it’s been fine so far. I hate buying TV’s, I start to research and get all hung up on the technology and what I “need” but at the end of the day it’s just a freakin’ TV!

If I'm understanding this correctly you have a TV made by TCL (which is apparently a large Chinese television manufacturer) that has Roku technology built it. This is not a separate Roku box, correct?

I'd suspect that TCL's support folks would have mentioned this but are there any firmware updates for the unit?

So the kind folks at TCL would like you to send their defective TV back at your expense? Any chance you bought the TV with a credit card, which may offer you additional protection?

Yes the tv has roku technology built into the unit. Unfortunately, the unit will not stay powered up long enough to find out if there are any updates. The tv was a Christmas gift that remained unopened until a few days ago as the room it was going to be in was being updated. I am going to try to retrieve the receipt from the gift giver and see if Walmart will do anything about the sitution.

oh, I understand now. It's a TV, not a stick or a box (I was wondering what TCL meant!) . So .. . my comment above is probably not helpful.

It seems that most retailers will grease the squeaky wheel, it's just a question of how much you squeak (or squawk, as the case may be). ;-) Does the TV has a tag indicating the date of manufacture? That should prove it's age without a receipt but a receipt should make things much easier.

IF NIB, walmart will likely take it back. If they sell the same exact model you could always buy it, stick your broken one in the box an return it. I'd feel guilty though if I had been using it since XMAS...if I just opened it and it's been defective all along....no so much so...

The box was just opened and the unit connected a little over a week ago, though I've had it since Christmas (it's been in a closet, in the box, unopened, as the room it was going in was not yet updated). So I do not feel guilty. Thanks for everyone's suggestion. Will be taking it down, boxing it up as soon i can get a bit of help from son to do it as I have a fractured wrist,

if u somehow get u $ back instead of an exchange then u reccomend getting a separate roku. u may want to look into A Samsung set over Rlc...lots if deals at Sam's club and bjs......
