bay area guy, I am in agreement with nik! As well as that, I am not sure what kind of pot and soil your plant is in, but make sure it's a well draining pot, and I recommend for soil using one that is specifically designed for Cactus and Succulents. I was able to find some at my local gardening center, but if there isn't one near you, amazon is a dear friend. Overall, your plant looks good and I am sure it will come back! Good luck

last pic .... is that a duplicate to the left?? ... is it infested also ... if not ... then just get rid of the duplicate .. and move on with your baby life ... check all your plants .. isolate those with problems ... if it were summer... i would suggest you put them outside for summer ... in full bright shade ... and treat them with a systemic remedy ... at least a month prior to bringing them back in the house for next winter .... though scale can be controlled mechanically ... by hand i mean ... they are one thing i go all out war on ... as im not real interested in playing with them repeatedly over the next 6 months to year ... outdoors is where i prefer to use chemicals ... good luck with the babe ... ken

You may have a genuine period piece that requires closer examination. Photos are not detailed enough to see joinery and I see it has a 2-board top, appears to be original, and the hardware looks primitive. It may very well be 18th Century. The most valuable blanket chests were those made in Wythe County VA, and can fetch several thousands of dollars. What I would do is reach out to the conservator of this historical society for guidance and email several photos if they will agree to look at them for guidance. This is a speciality area and you have to hook up with someone who knows the segment. Be sure to get detailed photos to send to them and they can may be able to give you some insight. This is very likely another case of "location, location, location", Jackie. First Prize was the darling of the exhibitors who infamously sprayed everything. It required it in many cases as it has little resistance to black spot and mildew. It was infamous for mildew and for passing that along to its offspring. Your friend's bush was fortunate to be planted in a supportive location where those two fungal issues aren't likely to be successful. It was also fortunate not to have been "exhibition pruned", whacked within an inch of its life, to continually push long new stems for exhibition. Generally, the larger the foliage mass, the larger the root mass, both of which produce a vigorous, healthy plant. Constantly whacking it back to a small plant so it has to push those new flowering stems eventually weakens the plant. Probably the best example I can point to for this is how Iceberg performs in Southern California. If Iceberg is allowed to grow to the size it wants to be, it's often very healthy with only a little mildew on the new flowering stems. Plants which are routinely whacked to keep them smaller, frequently black spot badly and require spraying for it. It's also entirely possible this plant is closer to the climbing sport than others may have been. Often "climbing" and "bush" types aren't an either/or situation, but rather points on a continuum, producing a wider range of levels of vigor than you might imagine. This plant benefited from being planted in a good place and receiving treatment that supported its success. That's often the situation when we find roses which have succeeded surprisingly well.
