Healthy Check-in for May
Comments (31)Not happy with being unable to lose a few pounds I've gained or with my lack of motivation to get back to exercising more than twice a week. However on a positive note DH, who has a major sweet tooth and always has dessert around, has decided to cut back on this. He's the model for being fit and trim but after having a stroke his doctor wants him to get his LDL lower and he doesn't want to take medication. He exercises a lot and eats very healthy other than the sweets so he's cut that out. I'm amazed how easily he has just eliminated it. The good thing for me is that now we don't have this around to tempt me which will be very, very good for my sugar addiction and in turn my weight loss I think. Now that I've killed off the dark chocolate covered pretzel crisps the house is all clear of this stuff. I don't have a problem avoiding buying it, just avoiding eating it if it's around. I've also decided I need to eat more protein. I'm not a big meat eater though I don't mind meat. I'm just a big fruit, vegetable and whole grain eater which is fine but not great for protein consumption. I'm thinking if I eat same calories but more protein I'll be more satisfied and not wanting to eat as much. Time will tell. My 57th birthday is coming up in ten days. I'm happy to be getting "old" considering I've had cancer three times. Yippee!! Between my situation and DH's stroke last year, we are very focused on enjoying life and doing things we want to do before we croak. You never know how much time you've got. We truly enjoy every day but for special events, we're going to Scotland in September. I've also just made reservations to go to Yellowstone and Grand Teton in the fall of 2015. We joke (kind of) that we hope we're still around by then. Seems like a long way off but it goes by fast....See MoreHealthy Check-in: June 2014
Comments (14)Sue, so sorry to hear about your pneumonia, right before vacation! I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm not a big beer drinker, I prefer wine as I age, but there's nothing like a cold beer on a hot summer day. And I prefer craft beers as well. Blue Moon used to be one of my favorites. At an outdoor party last week, I had my first Leinenkugel Summer Shandy of the "summer" season. While I typically prefer beer with more of a bite, this one is nice and light when it's hot out. As for my own check-in, I've been doing well on the exercise front. I ran nearly double the amount of mileage in May as I did in April, but attribute that to many nice days of perfect running weather. I've also been doing TRX once a week. I haven't been back to my barre class in a while and it shows. That class, when attended on a regular basis, really did wonders for my core. I could really see some improvement in my belly (got a little flatter but still plenty flabby!) as well as my love handles/glutes/etc. Unfortunately, since skipping that class for the last month, I've noticed all my hard work has gone by the way side. On a different note, dh got me a paddle board for my birthday, which was a few weeks ago. We were headed to the beach a few days after my birthday so we picked one up there from a friend of a friend who owns a SUP business. I hadn't had time to use it until this week - I went by myself on the bay in my neighborhood then yesterday, met a friend of mine who teaches paddle yoga. I thought she had a whole class, but it ended up just being me. It was a great workout, especially since the water was slightly choppy so I had to work hard to retain balance when doing poses. I'm really excited to keep up with this form of exercise. It's so peaceful and soothing and a treat to be outside while the weather is nice. My diet (and by that I just mean what I eat, I'm not on a specific diet) has been up and down. I went through a sugar binge at one point (several birthdays/family gatherings in May in my family), having too much access to freshly baked treats and even indulging in ice cream several times (I normally don't eat it much as it's not a big favorite of mine). But continuing to eat lean meats, fish, lots of veggies and fruits and getting back to a more low carb/good carb diet. From a mental health standpoint, I'd had some things weighing very heavy on my mind, including a big disagreement with my mother that was resolved this morning. I'm looking forward to not having that emotional baggage now that summer is arriving!!...See MoreAugust Healthy Check-in
Comments (94)Kellyeng, How did you make out with your thyroid results? Sueb, Sounds like you had a good start to your 50th bday goal by not gaining while on vacation. Build from there. Keep thinking positive and about lifestyle changes, not just weight loss. Trim 100-200 calories everyday, not so much your body misses them, enough to make difference over the course of a year. A little less cereal, a smaller amount of yogurt, one less piece of bread - you get the idea. Don't worry on the actual calorie amount, just tweak each meal by taking a smaller portion or skipping a calorie laden beverage. Whether we like it or not, movement is crucial to weight loss and maintenance. You need to find a way to move more. You know the usual things - park farther from the door, take the stairs, stand up more. Can you add an activity that doesn't seem like exercise? Horseback riding? Ice skating? Bike riding? Swimming or treading water? For fitness the expression is: don't sit when you can stand, don't stand when you can walk, don't walk when you can run (although I only run if I'm being chaaed). For long days touring when we travel, I tell my husband the rule changes to don't stand when you can sit, don't walk when you can ride, and don't ever pass a clean bathroom without using it. But I digress......See MoreSeptember Healthy Check-in
Comments (52)DH just had 12 (benign) polyps removed during a colonoscopy. Better get him on the black tea! I just wanted to report that I have lost 6.4 lbs. in the past 6-8 weeks, which for me is such a rare accomplishment that if I didn't just have a physical a couple of weeks ago, I'd assume that I was gravely ill. I made a pact with myself (I think I mentioned this here) that I would lose 10 lbs. before I turn 50. Well tomorrow is my 49th birthday, so I'm well on my way, assuming I can sustain this loss and continue. I have gained 10 lbs. in 10 years and I'm determined to change that trend. All I've done, and it's been painless really, is stop eating anything that has more than 3 g of sugar -- with a few exceptions, like an occasional yogurt. Oh, and I still have a few beers each weekend but that's really it. Also, I don't eat anything after dinner, except for maybe a couple times a week I'll crave something and I'll have a small square of good dark chocolate (which actually tastes very sweet to me now!). So yesterday I went to the jeans store, wanting to buy more of the same "uniform" jeans I have been wearing for years. Not necessarily in a smaller size, though my jeans are loose, just a fresh new pair. The salesperson convinced me that I was wearing my jeans too big and that I should try the smaller size. I said, oh, I don't think so, I haven't worn a 10 in jeans forever. In a nice way, she forced the size 10 on me, and in a different style than what I usually wear -- I wear the "Easy Rider" Lucky jeans because they're cut fuller in the hips. Well, the size 10 fit perfectly. Actually, at first I said I thought they were a bit snug and she said she actually thought they seemed a bit BIG (and then made me try the size 8, which was far too small). Anyway, I ended up trying on a bunch of different sizes but NONE in the size 12 that I've been wearing for probably 5+ years. When I put my old "loose" jeans on I could then see how unflattering they were. I was so full of confidence after buying my new jeans, I tried on about 100 pairs of pants in other stores in the mall, but didn't have one bit of luck. I must be the only woman in America with saddlebags. Anyway -- that was a great way to keep me motivated, and also educational! I never "use" salespeople in stores because I think I know everything. Maybe I should get help more often!...See MoreSpringroz
