I know little about leather --- but that sofa is damaged. I hope those with knowledge chime in soon -- but if I bought a new and not a 'second' quality - that I would not accept that sofa as is. Particularly the scraped part. Is the mark that looks a hole not a hole?

I know the top mark is definitely scraped. The other mark if I were to describe it looks like a burn hole that was repaired. There are 4 of them. The one that I posted is the largest of the four. It is not a hole, just looks that way.

It is very difficult with full aniline dyed leathers (this looks like a full aniline dyed leather as it looks white all the way through) to not have bug bits, healed scars, color bursts, barb wire marks etc. When they make a leather sofa the hides are laid out on a table. The cutter first marks the hide usually with a silver pen marking out imperfections that are not acceptable. You try to keep the cushion tops, arm tops and the front rail as clean as possible as this is what is most easily noticed. However if you wanted a sofa that was completely free of marks it would be almost impossible or your sofa would cost twice as much as there would be so much waste. The manufacturer will try to keep his waste down to a minimum maybe 20%. If you wanted a completely clean look you then might want to go with a protected or semi aniline dyed leather which is sanded, buffed and more or less painted. You will even get scars with semi aniline dyed leathers.

Markings on full aniline dyed leathers are to be expected just so they are not excessive. They are also considered the mark of higher end leathers.

In my opinion looking at the pictures the smaller of the scars are bug bites. I am fairly certain they are not burns and they are not repairs.

The one in the upper picture does look like a rub as there is also discoloration in the area around the mark.

As this leather is a solid color and not patterned it would be fairly easy to fix by a qualified tech such as Leather Solutions, Leather Medic, Fibrenew as well as others. The retailer may fight you on the bug bites but in as much as the rub has to be fixed I think they would agree to send out a tech and I predict a good outcome.

The retailer should be contacted and they should file a claim with the shipping company for the larger of the marks which I think is delivery related and I do think four of the bug bites on one panel is a little much and a tech should be sent out and not at your expense. They will most likley share in the cost of the repair...All this is just my opinion and I could be wrong as well and those involved may have other ideas.

The rub mark as one of my concerns makes me glad to hear that they should be repairable. Both arms in the upper corner have rub, the pic I posted is the worse of the tow. They don't look horrible, but I wasn't sure. It is aniline dyed leather. I totally understand the scaring and such. The one bite is the largest, but near the bottom of the piece (1st pic in original post). Here are the other three and an actual scar (clumsy cattle. ahaha) One to the far left, the other two spots just to the right of center. Lower right is scar that is completely fine. To give you an idea, the spot on the right is maybe 1/4" round. The first pic I posted is about 3/16" at it's largest. If the scars are considered normal passable scars I am fine with that. I knew that having scars and stretch marks were normal. I just wasn't sure if marks like these were fine. I could not find a leather website that stated a mark like this may show up.

It is obvious by your pictures that this is not a pure aniline leather. It appears to be a painted leather or surface dyed. I didn't even know these types of leathers were still manufactured. Neither one of these marks are scars they are damage. I also question if what you received is really all leather. Real leather that is dyed through will exhibit the color from front to back but in your photos it appears the deeper you go the whiter it gets and it is much whiter. This is not typical with real leather. Real leather that is dyed through will have the same shading but get lighter not brighter. This would imply an artificial backing not the suede you would expect to see in genuine leather hides. This is found in bonded leathers or vinyl. Even a split hide would show suede not this stark white material. Can you feel suede fibers or is it something other than suede? I am going to show you some examples of pure aniline leathers and how they look with scars etc...Notice your leather does not look like this. If you paid for a high quality leather piece this is not what you received. I would defiantly have the store pay for this and I for sure would dig deeper into what you actually have. Good Luck!

While I am no expert, but I do not question that this sofa is pure aniline. Under the cushions is a swatch of the leather that is used...

The leather you are showing does not display the characteristics of a pure aniline. The leather you have is a finished leather that appears to have a surface dye applied. Pure aniline leathers do not have the characteristics of your leather. Although your photos are not great it almost looks like a split hide.

In my opinion having examined many hides over the years and having observed hides being marked for excessive defects, had I been marking the hide I probably would have marked out the small oval shaped mark pictured above. The small scars are natural markings and this is an aniline dyed leather, again in my opinion. The leather may have a sheen to the surface but that is a result of the manner in which the leather was finished and is not an indication of the application of a pigmented dye.

Can you tell me the name of the leather?

Ok, in most respects these comments are inline, however their are different types of aniline dye but for the most part a white leather requires some pigments to be applied after dying to get that true white color. Its a good observation that a aniline dyed leather the color will soak through to the back side. A more heavier pigmented leather would have covered any scratches, insect bites ect. But the leather would have lost a good percentage of ability to breath. That ability to breath is what gives leather that special comfort and feel.

If these insect bites are only on the outside arms and backs, then the manufacture will at most offer to try and repair as freethinker has said, as only the best parts of the leather is used for the inside/face side of sofa.

Was their any damage on the outside of the cartoning around the area of the arm that has some scuffing? If not the shipper may claim this done before they received the sofa.

I would think that the smaller spots are bug bite, barbwire or some other natural marking of the hide however the 1st photo looks like a rub mark & would be deemed to be a transit related damage by the manufacture. The delivery company should handle this issue, glad there were notations made on the bill of lading. Contact both the retailer & the delivery company immediately.

The leather name is Mont Blanc. The sofa arrived at my house with no wrapping. The leather feels the same through out. Even where the bug bites marks are. On that same panel is a cut scar which I know is normal and not concerned with. The leather it self feels great and smells great. They are sending out a repair restoration specialist to look at the sofa. I appreciate everyone's input.

One question I do have on an unrelated note. As I was going around the sofa, I noticed that their was not a tag that actually states who the manufacturer is. There is the typical tag that says, do not remove under penalty of law, blah blah. But nothing saying who manufactured it. Is this typical of furniture companies? Why would they not want to have their name on it? I even looked under the sofa. This is a mid/high end sofa in my opinion. US made.

Does your sales contract not tell you who the manufacturer is? Did you order without knowing the manufacturer?

I ordered knowing who made it, I just noticed that there isn't a tag stating so. I wasn't sure how that worked. I wasn't sure why there isn't anything that states the manufacturer.

Not all manufacturers put labels & there are some that will do with a retailer label

Well, they sent out a local repair tech and he is getting the color to fix the corners. He said the bug bites/scars on the side he thinks are acceptable because they are on a side. He said if they were on a primary location then no. When I mentioned it was aniline, he corrected my pronunciation but didn't question the leather, nor did I. I don't anything about how to repair a sofa, but he did not seem troubled by it at all.

Has the repair been made & was it acceptable? It sounds like the tech's plan is to patch the area which in looking at the area I would think the panel would need to be removed & the leather stretched if possible & reattached or that the delivery company should order a cut & sewn panel to replace.

No repairs made as of yet. I was told that the "bug bites" as I called them were acceptable since they were on a side panel. They had to order the color from the manufacturer to repair the scuffs. I am waiting patiently. Thank you for checking in.

If they are ordering color from the manufacturer they are most likely getting a small amount of the dye & it must be that the rubs are just that & not a hole. I would request to keep the remainder of the dye so you will have for touch ups later on if needed.
