However, since you don't, how do you feel about some version of terra cotta? That appears to be the range of some of the more highly colored hues in your fireplace and would warm things up without introducing a color that's not already there. How bold do you want to go? Personally, I love Farrow and Ball Red Earth, but that's probably deeper than you want. Dutch Pink is an interesting, paler option. You may want to consider embracing that yellow/green northern light instead of fighting it; consider one of the green- tinted creamy off-whites like Bone or Fawn. They may end up looking like intentional pale greens that are stone-like enough to coordinate with your tiles. Many of us have learned that we can't fight Mother Nature, er, northern green light. I'm with Lyn, very little clashes with navy. You could go high contrast with a complementary color in the orange family. You could stick with colors that are adjacent on the color wheel (green and purple). But really, reds, pinks, and yellows all look good with navy. You can go with a bold color (hot pink!) or choose something more muted (terra cotta or a muted olive green). It just depends on where you want to take it.

These great colorographies from The Land of Color help you compare the two colours in detail. Hue - to which Hue Family does each belong and where within does it it? Value - how light does each colour appear. (higher the number = lighter the colour) Chroma - how colourful and strong or near to neutral and weak? (lower = closer to neutra) LRV - how much light does each colour reflect back into the space ? I think the differences between the two offer contrast in all of those separate areas. Still would recommend testing on boards in your space with your light. 🌈

That is not going to be an easy project. Especially if you are planning to do a contrasting color on the back panel. A professional outcome would likely require disassembling the shelves. You need to sand all of it carefully or the paint will scratch off as soon as you put all of those things back in it. And it should be sprayed, not brushed. It’s a beautiful shelving unit. I would try restyling the pieces that go in it before trying to paint it. If you really don’t like it, it’s probably easier to replace it with something else. But it looks like someone payed a pretty penny for it !
