A few pics of the pond and some pond life...
Comments (30)Jayinflorida: How do you prevent your goldfish from eating the snails? I was thinking about trying to find some snails for the pond that came with the house we just bought, but read pretty much everywhere that goldfish would eat them. I'm also having trouble finding snails that won't be invasive and will last the winters (I'm in New England). Any suggestions? The reason is because of the pond sludge problem that I'm hoping snails would help with. We do have a (mechanical) filter, and some water flow that we hope to turn back into a waterfall soon. We currently have 7 goldfish in about a 500 gal pond, and from reading this forum, some of the plants are apparently water lilies. Not sure what the others are, yet. :) Thanks! Comments (9)Thanks for all of the input. And I'm humiliated that I misspelled anacharis (left an "a" out). I am usually the one cringing at misspellings and now I have one in the title of my post for all to see! Comettose: are you talking about the plastic crate-type flower flats? Do you just kind of dig down in the gravel to anchor individual pieces or do you do it in clumps? It sounds like a great idea - much more attractive than pots/crates in the water as you eventually have a "shag carpet" of anacharis on the bottom! How do you keep your fish from pulling it out? I wrap my lily pots in fruit tree netting in spring to keep the koi out of the bases. I wonder if I could do the same with the trays of anacharis? I guess I will be making a trip out to the local aquatic plant farm this afternoon to buy more anacharis and try to start over. I don't understand why my small koi left it alone for so long and then just decided to "take it out". Boredom, I guess. We are planning on building a larger, deeper pond to house our koi and the existing pond will be connected as a plant/goldfish-only filter pond. I guess we need to do that sooner rather than later!...See MoreNew Pond Design Questions
Comments (3)I'm no pro... but these are my thoughts. (Just had 600 people come and see my pond set-up (Pond tour)). What I have come to appreciate. 1. Perhaps you have a possibility of having TWO falls with TWO 4500 GPH systems (external is THE way). My understanding is it would be beneficial that the pond turned over once an hour. 2. Have the plumbing below and Incorporate a settlement chamber set-up. What you design into the front end of the job (SC will capture a MAJOR part of the gunk that flows through system), will save you time and effort when it is running. 3. Bottom drains Bottom drains Bottom drains > Connect 1 pump from each BD to run through SC to Biofilter water falls. Check out the surface skimmer types for a better look to your new pond. You could set it up so it gravity feeds to SC. 4. If you have koi AND possible predator problem; go deep and steep. (Knock on wood) no predator problem for me(70 degree sides and 3.5 feet deep). Well that's my bit, LP...See Moregroundbeef1
