There was a fad in the 50s and 60s of songs written to be silly or even ridiculous. Fortunately that passed. Others just pop up from time to time.

The lyrics of many rock and roll songs come about from the composers simply choosing words that fit the rhythm pattern, irrespective of where it takes the meaning. Or, the many songs that are written because the composer liked the sound or rhythm pattern of a word or phrase. I've heard many, many musician/composers say this, notwithstanding the belief of fans that each song must result from some deep experience the composer had. It's not the case more often than not.

I think Strawberry Fields (a place in Lennon's neighborhood and an interesting sound pattern) is one of the best songs the Beatles ever recorded. It's so typical of John Lennon's creativity.

Snidely, I don't disagree. The songs I listed were hits for a reason. There is great poetry in there, even though I think Strawberry Fields is one of those songs you described where much of it was more about the sound of the words than deliberation.

Morz, my mother was the same but earlier music - Big Bands, then Broadway/movies. Yes, I still remember all of the words! Still sing along to the Big Band DVDs :-)

I always felt so sorry for the singer of McArthur Park. He was comparing the cake to his life and the recipe would never be the same again no matter how many times he did it. No 2nd love is ever like the 1st one.

There are "songs" that set my teeth on edge and songs I really, really like; all for no reason at all.

No need to feel sorry for Richard Harris, the recording was a huge hit that brought him (as an actor, not a singer) added money and fame.
