Comments (33)Sam Goh, Most dealers would be happy to sell to you even if they are hours away. But how much are you saving for that hassle? The local dealer is less likely to help you out with any problems if you left the area to make your purchase. That one small change you want to make after the fact might be $200 from your local dealer, but $800 if the other dealer has to make the drive to you. Same with Home Depot-do you think HD is going to help you at all if you need help later? If it's an appliance that will wear out in 5 yr anyway, that's one thing. When it's a part of your house that will be there for decades, I'd be glad to pay even a few thousand more from a reputable dealer that will be there for the minor problems. If you have ~60 windows, just keep in mind that it will be exponentially more expensive for you if you have to change them all out in 5-10 yr because they're junk... Just my $0.02, hope you can find a good solution that works well for you....See MoreAndersen windows
Comments (12)The first thing to look at in a window design is the sill detail. If the window manufacturer is serious about the window the sill will have a downward and outward slope and there will be a drip groove under the nose of the sill and a groove to receive the top of the exterior cladding material. This is the way windows have been successfully designed for hundreds of years because water still runs over a sill nose and tries to travel back against the cladding and if it is successful water will get behind your siding and possibly inside your wall cavity. Here is the Andersen 200 TW sill detail: Here is the Andersen 400 TW sill detail. Both windows are competitively priced because they have a tough paint coating instead of a cladding. But for weather resistance gravity is your friend if you use it properly. The 200 can be detailed so it doesn't leak under the flat sill by adding a properly sloped and grooved sub-sill just below the flat sill or using sill flashing that comes out between the next lower courses of siding but I would start with a window designed to shed water....See MoreExperience with Renewal by Andersen windows?
Comments (63)I'm going to say something on this very old post. I hope everyone is happy with the choices they made on their windows and doors. So are we. We replaced all 17 windows in our house late 2022 with Renewal by Andersen (some single casements, some double and triple sliding windows) and are ecstatic with the results. Comments about trying to find windows, find a contractor (our always reliable fantastic contractor that we've used for years said no to doing the project due to the size and complexity of the windows), etc. are true. Was RBA expensive? Yes, chokingly so! BUT....the team that did the measurements, and the installation, were superb, and we could not recommend them more highly. One stop shopping as they say, We would go with them again in a heartbeat....See MoreAndersen 400 Series Sash Upgrade
Comments (2)2)Andersen's finishing directions for Terratone 400 series says to submit color samples to Andersen for approval if painting any color darker than Terratone. If any of your windows are in any direct sunlight, I would not be painting them black. The issue is not fading, it is that it can cause the vinyl to expand at a rate different than the wood it is clad to, causing it to warp, allowing water to get between the cladding and the wood, causing it to rot. 3) I've never heard of this. I don't see any way to do it just by adding hardware. Possibly you could buy a replacement casement window to go in the frame of the picture window, but the largest casement window Andersen makes is 3' wide. A 43" operable casement would be enormous. 4) I have no idea if the mounting holes for the new single-lever lock mechanism is the same as the old individual lock mechanism, but I doubt they are. It sounds like you're talking about buying just the sashes and the hardware, not a full replacement window. It's hard to imagine that the cost of materials and labor for replacing the sashes, locks, operators, stops (which probably are different for the new hardware) and prepping and painting the frames is that much less than putting in new-construction windows that it is worth the risk of painting 30 year old frames a color which may cause them to fail, requiring new windows anyway in some number of years....See Moresmileythecat
