I have a nephew that is 27 but is incontinence where adult pull ups, and a his room have a foul urine odor, will bake in soda and vinegar remove the smell from mattress, clothes, and carpet

I need to know have anybody use the baking soda and vinegar remedy and did the odor go away

Baking soda and vinegar can be used on hard surfaces that can be rinsed. They wouldn't be my choice for fabrics, and they wouldn't be my choice for urine odor control. For your situation, I would use one of the enzyme products that people use for pet odors, such as Nature's Miracle. But these products have to soak into the fabric, not just be sprayed lightly. So it takes a lot of the product to do the job. And it takes time for them to dry.

Rabbits and deer will eat almost anything if they are desperate. Onions and garlic don't deter our wildlife, nor do most of the supposedly rabbit and deer proof plants. We've had rabbits graze garlic chives down to the roots. We live on a acre of cactus, yucca, thistles and all kinds of thorny brambles. We also have hawks, owls and bobcats strolling through regularly. We have deer sleeping in front of the house, rabbits hopping from one plant to another, though all the spiky, thorny brush. So don't believe the stories that predators or spiky leaves or smelly plants will protect your garden from wildlife. Commercial repellants are all based on bloodmeal or sulphurous eggs, and they are reputed to work, at least for a time. I make my own repellant - recipe is given earlier in this thread. I find this works but must be reapplied about once a month. I also use chicken wire cages around small plants. All of this is necessary when the animals have to eat or starve to death. Cheryl

I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this thread. Last summer we had a rash of unwelcome cat vistors to the front of our house. Taunting our cat inside, spraying, urinating, defacating all over our once-nice flower beds. It was so bad in fact at one point we had a cat spray the tires of my car! Fast forward to this year - after many natural remedies & some chemical ones, too - we continue to have a foul odor near the entrance to our home. So the other day I got down on the ground & sniffed the source of the smell to our boxwoods...then thought - I can't believe cat spray could have fouled up shrubbery! It is incredibly reassuring to know that the boxwoods are likely the source - and I can easily chop them suckers off and replace with something far more welcoming! Thanks for the info everyone!

Krud Kutter. Sold at Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart... (You can also start with Spot Shot--this got red paint out of cream carpet for me, but it has a strong chemical smell; if you have urine in hardwood floors, Out!--usually found at Wal-Mart--works well.) It works on just about everything...except oil spills on concrete. I am a Jane-of-All-Trades (art, construction, automotive, anything, everything) and incredibly messy. Krud Kutter is amazing for laundry stains--removes blood, right before your eyes, with just a quick squirt. It doesn't bleach items AND is eco-friendly. I never dilute the stuff because I just like to go strong the first time around, but it IS a concentrated formula. I have a 12-year-old chihuahua that just loves to hike his leg on everything, and he also doesn't like to drink a lot of water; so, his urine is POTENT. I've used Krud Kutter on the diapers I now make him wear as well as in the carpet cleaner, and it is amazing. If you have heating and a/c ducts they should be cleaned regularly, even if you don't have an odor, so that's the first thing I would do. The next thing would be to install a vapor barrier system on the floor of your cellar and any crawl space. Do you have any carpeting, that would be next. Unless it is newly installed I'd be looking (i.e pulling it up) to make sure the padding and underside are clean and not moist, etc. In general, lowering the humidity helps. I have some closets in room that had been left closed up which have absorbed an odor into the plaster. No amount of airing seems to make a difference, so I'm going to paint the interior as a cure. Sometimes old wallpaper can be smelly. You didn't say if it was a foul rotten, decaying flesh, or mouse nest/droppings or even old cat pee, those can be persistent and somewhat intermittent smells. I always find a good, hot scrubbing and forced air drying helps get rid of general empty house smell. I use a mild powdered laundry detergent without optical brighteners and hot water and bushels of towels. I scrub everything, floors, walls woodwrok, ceiling, etc. HTH Molly~

Change pull-ups frequently, tie them in a grocery bag immediately, toss in trash outside the house. This will go a long ways in controlling the room odor.

Wash sheets daily and put a draw sheet across the bed over waterproof pad. Pull-ups sometimes will leak at night.

Wear fresh clothes daily in case drips have landed on them. Clothes to be washed store in container outside.

Be sure chair seats have a protective pad over upholstery or they will absorb odor.

It is amazing how a few drips can cause a house to smell.

Bleach water used to wash around the toilet will eliminate bathroom odor from urine. Especially the lid hinges and under the water tank.

I very much understand wanting to control the odor. I provided hospice care for my grandmother, and although it was a blessing to be able to spend time with her and care for her, the odor was overwhelming. Krissie has great advice. I will add that I used, and still use a product called OdoBan. It is a disinfectant/order eliminator. You can buy it at Sams club, Home depot. Its concentrated, and you dilute according to usage. I believe its about $10 a gallon or so. You can add it to laundry as well. Works wonders for odors, and kills germs as well. I suggest opening a window in the room if you use it, to help things dry ( and fresh air helps with odor as well )

Baking soda and vinegar are good for cleaning, and odor removal, but in a situation with very heavy urine odor, it doesn't cut it. Try Odoban, or an enzymatic odor neutralizer like natures miracle to break down the odors.
