D. kaki rootstock for NC?
Comments (1)Cousinfloyed, You can call Michael at Burnt Ridge and talk to him personally. Explain to him that you want Virginiana rootstocks for hardiness. I think Scott live in zone 6-7 and Lotus rootstocks did just fine for him. I have several Kakis grafted on Kaki rootstocks that I testing it this winter. I will see if they survive this winter with protection in zone 5a. Tony...See MoreSoil pH = 7.7! Should I plant or cancel my order?
Comments (23)Thanks to everyone for all of the wise advice! I'm happy to see that last post by professorroush especially (thank you!) because I have decided to go ahead with the planting of the rugosas. At the very worst, I'll end up with a good post for the "worst gardening mistakes ever" forum ;) I do have a little bit of time to try and amend the area a little bit in the hope that I can add enough material to get the pH down a little bit at least. Do you all think I should mix in some peat? Or something else? Is there an acidic bagged soil widely available that is marketed for things like azaleas or anything like that? I love digging in the dirt so I'm not opposed to making it a bit of a raised/mounded bed either......See MoreAnybody know quality of Signature Design Furniture by Ashleys?
Comments (1)I think, perhaps, I would cancel my order unless you have the option of sending it back upon inspection. Our city had an Ashley Furniture move in, and I thought, "Oh Good, another furniture store!" However, I was very disappointed when we went through the store, to find the quality very poor. It seemed that there was a lot of plastic that looked somewhat like wood. Otherwise, it was mostly veneers. If quality furniture is important to you, I would not deal with Ashleys. I have not been back to the store again....See MoreJust order self-watering pots
Comments (5)It depends on what your question really is...if you're asking do you need self-watering pots to grow African violets, the answer is emphatically "no." These must be some artistic creations, one would assume at that price! If you love them and you can well afford them, there is nothing wrong with it - although self-watering pots' function is much affected by how they were made, and if you have heavy minerals in your water it can clog up the pores in the liner pot to the point where it stops wicking up the water in the reservoir pot...so they can be a bit tricky and need some monitoring to make sure the potting mix is not too wet nor too dry. That said, there are lots of alternatives to caring for your AV's: they can be top watered or bottom watered (as long as you don't allow them to sit in water longer than half an hour or so;) they can be mat watered or wick watered. People get very creative using recycled containers for wicking AV's. You might want to do some searches and read up on watering practices in general. Then, when you go to your BB store, make sure you buy from a fresh shipment a plant that looks to be in good condition. The potting soil that your AV will be in at that point is not ideal for self-watering pots, usually solid peat. You'll want to remove as much of that soil as possible and re-plant in a good potting mix with extra perlite added for soil aeration. I'm sure others will chime in, but in the meantime here is a excellent link to read more about watering and pot types for AV's: FAQ, Joyce Stork, AVSA...See MoreUser
