Would this RH light work in my dining room?

I've had a couple Houzz dilemmas about my dining room. In one, I bought this art. In another, I had the table top distressed and refinished in a dark walnut color. Both times, Houzzers said to lose my chandelier, lol:). I love this RH light. Would it work? I also plan to remove the oriental rug and go rugless, letting more of my pretty walnut floors show. P.S., the plant is real, not silk.

Comments (18)Hi again Stinky. Here's a few thoughts. First, I am not loving the deep color on the wall opposite the stair walls. Will they stay white? If so, I think a softer color on the long wall would look more harmonious with the walls opposite. I also wonder if you have considered painting the sides (I think it's called the stringer) of the stairs? Not the treads...leave them wood. I am just feeling distracted by all those horizontals and verticals. (Sorry, I know you didn't ask...) As for the long hallway wall, I think a neutral gray would be up-to-date (don't want to use the T word) and will play nicely with the white on the opposite side. It keeps you out of the pastel scheme and adds sophistication to the pink, which I love, btw. I stuck with the HC colors since you seem to be drawn to them. Look at Litchfield Gray (my fave) and Elmira White, both on the cool side. Or Manchester Tan and Grant Beige, each a bit warmer. I would rather not see you go too tan/brown because that would move into the pink/brown combo which is kind of a cliche by now, though very pretty. For the room at the end of the hallway, a subtle green like Richmond Gray might be nice. (I love it with the QA Pink and the Litchfield Gray.) I can't really tell if that would work with the draperies though, and I don't know if you have your heart set on something else. But I think a subtle green really does nice things for red and yellow. Keep in mind that these are just "places to start." That back room may have lighting that calls for something clearer like Beacon Hill Damask. It's tough to know without being there. OB2B- I really like the Troy Brooklyn, it is very similar to the adjacent kitchen light, which is the Troy Toledo, perhaps too similar. I also think I might like to get away from visible bulbs, if possible. Something I love about the Brooklyn, is the rope! Nosoccermom: I do love the industrial lights, but my family is a bit tired of my industrial edge. My 14 yo ds even commented on it- lol. I think I will go for the drum light, I love the way the arcs in the metal fixture, tie in to the arc in the metal trestle base of the table. Comments (32)I love the drapes you have! I think the problem is the wall color. The soft gold in your great room would work well with both your drapes and the fireplace tile. Or maybe a warm, soft terra rosa, glazed or color-washed? But personally I like the gold. Ivory or a paler version of the gold would also work. Do some big sample boards - just some old cardboard will do - but at least 2'x4' or 3'x3'. Your windows read very high-set - that stands out as not being the usual placement - you can experiment with the height the drapes are mounted and see if a different proportion pleases you better - maybe a little higher, even almost to the ceiling. The drapes are puddling, and maybe they have a hem that could be let out - they could go higher. Or sew on a contrasting band of terracotta on the bottom. (or whatever color the inner curtains are - hard to tell in pictures sometimes.) The bit of wall between the window and the crown molding is so narrow that it might be better not to treat it as the wall but as panelling, like over the mantel. All you would have to do is frame it with short vertical pieces of flat molding over the window casing verticals, just glue it on. Paint the molding to match your trim and either do the recesses the same or to match your over-mantel recesses. A bigger rug out to six inches of the walls. Something easy to clean and with a pattern - you have children eating there. My youngest is nine, we still have spills. Low pile, no loops, not fuzzy. Something to occupy the walls will make the room feel cozier - a long window seat with a bench cushion and pillows, and cabinets underneath. Do you ever have many people to a sit-down dinner - an L-shaped banquette would give you lots of seating. Kids could play there, do their homework, look out the window, keep you company as you worked in the kitchen - put away homework and toys in the cabinets - presto clean. Also your linens and servingware not used every day. Accessories with more weight and color, more dimensionality than the plates on the wall and the pictures and things over the hearth. It really is a good dining room, good bones, good molding, good view, good fireplace, good flooring, spacious. It won't be hard to love. The fireplace is your starting point because you can't change the tiles. Then either wall color, rug, or rug, wall color, working with the tiles. THEN drapes and upholstery. Then accessories. Paint is your cheapest element. Even if you hire someone to paint, you can buy the cans and do big sample boards yourself or directly on the wall. You don't like the color? Worst that happens is you're out the cost of the sample can. Comments (13)Our previous home and our dining furniture were destroyed by a storm back in January so everything in the space will be new. I was going to wait until the house was nearer completion to decide exactly what furniture I will put in the space, beginning with the table and chairs and going from there. I’m not even sure if I want a hutch in the space or not as it will crowd the space and limit me in the future if I need to use table extensions for larger gatherings. Plus, there is a 30” wall between the kitchen and dining room (shaded in pink). Therefore, my gut says center between windows :) I just wanted to be sure before I had the electrician move it so I didn’t end up asking him to move it back later... :/...See More
