Kindle Paperwhite or Fire HD7

I am thinking about getting another eReader in addition to my IPAD Air. First I thought Kindle paper-white may be good enough since I only want to use it to read. But I just noticed Amazon Fire HD7 is on sale with more features and at lower price.

My only experience on eReader is IPAD Air. I have never use any kindle device.

Please share your opinion of choosing between Kindle Paper-white or Fire HD7.

Thank you in advance for the suggestions.

From a weight standpoint, the Paperwhite wins. It's 7.8 oz. vs 14 oz. for the HD7 vs. 16 oz. for your Air. The Paperwhite, therefore, is less than half the weight of your Air. I don't have any of the 3 but when I bought my first tablet, I didn't think the oz. difference would matter. After using it for a short time, I realized that weight was very much an issue.

With the Paperwhite you'll have no glare on the screen from bright sunlight. The HD has a different type of screen in which glare could be an issue. I enjoy cruising several times a year and am considering a Paperwhite specifically because of the glare problem on my tablet.

Good luck in your decision.

You've already got an iPad Air for games, movies, etc...! All the Fire HD is is an attempt at an iPad. If all you want this for is to Read, the Paperwhite will be the better choice. Like advised by juneroses above, the Paperwhite is a non-glare surface and would be excellent in sunlight whereas you iPad and the Fire HD wouldn't be very easy to read in the sunlight!

just keep in mind that android tablets let you install the kindle app and the nook app so you can have all of those on one device. It really depends on your needs and wants as to what you get. the tablet with the best sound that I have owned was the vizio it had 3 speakers so no matter which direction you held it in you had stereo and the sound was fantastic. Wish more manufacturers would be more interested in the sound quality and take a lesson and put at least 3 or 4 speakers on them. I often struggle hearing with the one small speaker especially on my phone. I love love love my new Asus transformer tf300 10" tablet with dock but it too could use some improvement in the sound and speaker department. My husband still absolutely loves his lookbook in fact he now has his and mine and I am trying to make him transition over to my Vizio tablet so he has more options and can do other things on it. He is fighting me he wants to stick with his lookbook he is not a fan of the touch screen he keeps touching things by accident then I hear swearing lol. He is not a good student is all I have to say LOL That lookbook is extremely light weight you will not likely find any tablet that is that light.

I find the kindle fire much too heavy to read on and I have the smaller one. I also do not like the way pages turn. You cannot read one handed as you can w/ the regular kindle (at least I can't) and you have to touch the screen which I find distracting, not as reliable and I need to worry that my hands aren't wet or don't have popcorn butter on them, which is not an issue with my regular kindle. I also REALLY don't like the bright colored screen when reading on it. It is like reading on a computer and I prefer to feel more like I am reading a real book, not a computer screen (I look at computer screens all day for work). With my regular kindle, I can use it outside or to read in the tub and this would not be possible at all with a kindle fire. I can forget that I am on a device and feel like I am just reading a book. I don't get that w/ the Kindle Fire. A basic kindle (not touch- I hate the touch and got rid of my Kindle touch) can be had pre-owned for like $35-$40 from cowboom. I would definitely just pick one of those up to read on and not try to read on either the fire or ipad, whichever you decide to get. I've bought two kindles from here already because I want to have one in each of our houses and they've both been in good condition. I've also dropped my regular kindle MULTIPLE times (onto concrete, and falling off a hammock onto a flagstone patio when my dog jumped onto the hammock) and the kindle is none-the-worse for the wear. I do not think the same would have been true w/ an ipad or fire This post was edited by beaglesdoitbetter on Sat, Sep 21, 13 at 22:42

Kindle-Which One?

You can make the text bigger, so size wise I'd go look at them and see what feels most comfortable. I have the original B&W Nook which I use when I go to the beach, so I agree with Terriks that any of the color monitor readers are virtually worthless outside. So if you like to read a lot on vacation, try to find one used. They're pretty cheap. I also have the color Nook which I use everyday and just love. Of course, I get reader envy and think about getting the newer versions. I am intrigued by the iPad Mini because I have a mac/iphone and can keep email, apps etc. all in sync with my iCloud. Plus the iPad has nook and kindle apps that make it incredibly easy to read books in either library. It also has an overdrive media app that allows you to download library books directly to your iPad. So, with that all said, I think you should look at the iPad mini. Other than they are more expensive, they offer the most versatility - email, apps, internet, pictures, audio books etc.

"Just to clarify, the Libby app was created by Overdrive, but it is a separate app and works a bit differently.: I see that my earlier reference to Libby was incomplete. Can we replace the word "app" with the word "software" (which of course "apps" are) and say it a bit differently? If so: The word "App" is typically used for software running on mobile devices - phones and tablets. They're programs like other programs. Overdrive has two families of programs - its older stuff, which it refers to as "Overdrive Apps" are available in 6 flavors - for Apple mobile devices, for Android devices, for Kindles, for Macs, one described as being for "Windows 8&10" and another simply described as being for "Windows Desktop". These can be used for Ebooks and Audiobooks. The newest program family is called "Libby" and is for Apple Moblie (iOS) and Android devices only. All work just fine and continue to be supported. Their user interfaces vary. Because I download audiobooks to a PC and then transfer files to a small portable player, I use the PC version and find the Windows Desktop version to be more user friendly. For the rare occasions when I read ebooks, I check out the Kindle version when available and read it using a Kindle app on another device (as I don't have a Kindle). No Overdrive software is needed to do that because at checkout on the library site, you get redirected to your Amazon account which will then direct the download to the Kindle devices and Kindle apps you've registered for your account. .

june and bug, thank you so much for your inputs and suggestions. You convinced me! I have purchased a paperwhite for its weight and non-glare surface.

You could just download the kindle app for your iPad then you wouldn't need to purchase another device. I have an eink kindle and a fire HD and love them both. Eink is better for reading in sunlight. Amazon has a great kindle forum. Mary

Thank you Mary. Yes, I have Kindle app on all my apple devices, Mac, iPad, and iPhone. I use the paperwhite as extra one.

I don't care for the Paperwhite due to the way the page renders. There's sort of a "flash" when the words change that I just can't get used to. Hard to describe. I much prefer the Fire where one page slides off the screen as the other page comes on. I've seen some people complain about what I referenced, above, on the Amazon forums, but most people, by far, either don't notice it or aren't bothered by it.

azmom,

You're welcome. Do you like your new Paperwhite? I'm not much of a Reader but I might consider buying one for my wife. I've read 3 books in the last 40 years. I got hooked on the Hunger Games Trilogy after watching the first movie of four. My wife and daughter have both read the Hunger Games Trilogy (they both read a lot). I usually only read when I have to, just don't enjoy it!

Hello bug, I read a lot, and love reading from my IPad Air, but at times, it gets heavy while holding the device and its leather case. Paperwhite is lighter. I was on a flight this past weekend, a fellow passenger mentioned his Paperwhite gives less eye strain after hours of reading.

I'm sure it does help with the Eye Strain problem. These LED/LCD are bright and hard on the eyes. We really don't notice it much now, but when we first switched from the old CRT Style Monitors and TV's most of us complained about how bright the LCD Screens were. I can see how the Paperwhite screen would be easier on the eyes after a long night of reading.

I have an 10.1" Acer Iconia a500 w/Android 4.0 in a Swivel Case and I understand how your arms could get tired holding your iPad Air. My Acer a500 is a very heavy tablet. I recently upgraded to an 8" Acer Iconia W4-820 w/Windows 8.1 and Case (not swivel). You wouldn't believe the difference in the weight between those two Tablets!
