Anyone have Pee Wee or Sikes hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia)?
Comments (10)After seeing Roper's Harlequin Glory Bower tree I was tempted to get one, even with the sucker issue, but recently read somewhere else that it needs afternoon shade so I think that's off the list. Right now I have the Sikes, Salvia coccinea (thanks to Pfmastin's pic with the hummer), and White Bomb chrysanthemum. I'm going to order for spring delivery. Don't want to move the abutilon until then. We'll start getting winter hummers in another month or two and that always puts on a big flower feast through the winter months. I'm still going to look locally, but if I can't find a dwarf oakleaf here I'll probably order from Lazy S's....See MoreAnyone have rooted pink hydrangeas for trade?

Comments (14)The Nikko should not be cut back until it is clear where the dead branches are. In my area (zone 5B-6A) I wait until mid May at least then cut off above the green shoots. By cutting the Nikko back like that they cut off this years flowers which actually set last year. Endless Summer is a type of hydrangea will bloom off this year's growth but Nikko will not. Nikkos are beautiful but not reliable bloomers in my area because of the winter kill issue. In my area, unless sited perfectly, they will only bloom maybe 1 year out of 3 or 5. Annabelle are a different type (arborescens), they can be cut back. I know how you feel. I had someone pull up lilies that took years to establish because she thought they were weeds (I can see one, but after seeing the bulb wouldn't you guess they weren't weeds?). I almost cried....See MoreBloomstruck hydrangea
Comments (15)Here the answers 1. Planted under tree (dappled sunlight all day), maybe one hour of direct sun light late evening 2. Mulched well to keep moisture , the area surrounding the plant was mulched using black anti-weed cloth and on top white gravel. 3. we had a lot of rains this spring and i think this helped 4. I added a cow manure , thrown half bag in the middle of the shrub (all old wood died and didn't survive the winter, i noticed a lot of new shoots from the ground. I cut all old woods. all blooms from new shoots 5. I applied a generous amount of Miracle Grow slow release ultra bloom around the root zone and in the middle of the shrub (i thought i am going to kill it hhhh) 6. I added Aluminum 3 times last year and 2 times this year (once a month) , both to the soil and as soluble in water. I ended up having mix of blue and pink....See MoreOctober_Gardens
