Clematis Florida Sieboldii

Dear garden experts, please let me know if you have any luck growing this specific clematis Florida Sieboldii in zone 6a Pennsylvania. I have several other clematis in my garden of different types. Last year I ordered 2 Florida Sieboldii from Donahue Clematis and received 2 very tine ones. Garden Crossings supposedly had a bit larger size last year. I planted them in peat moss, fresh soil and dehydrated cow manure like I do all my other clematis. It bloomed for a while as you see below but both of them did not survive this past winter. They supposed to be hardy to zone 6. Do you grow little ones in the container first and then put them outside next year to get bigger roots. And do you know of any other seller who do sell larger size? I researched the web and can't find any they do. Here are some of my other favorite ones in my garden. Florida Seiboldi cannot be put in the ground in zone 6. I have mine in a large planter and I take it into my unheated garage for the winter. I bought it from Brushwoood four years ago and although it was small has survived this far and has become reasonably big. It is just beginning to leaf out and should have some flowers by June. I will post pictures some pictures then.

Yes, if you read the literature, most clematis authorities consider this to be a rather tender species:
"needs a very sheltered spot in the garden or grow in large pots or tubs in a cold greenhouse or conservatory"
"tender to a degree, this climber needs a choice warm wall but in favored areas only"
(Both of these from British authors referring to growing it in the UK, which is zone 7 and higher).
And from a more local authority, LInda Beutler: " it is slow to establish and somewhat tender. The best plants of this that I have seen are container grown indoors and rolled outside when the plant blooms."

I live in a very mild zone and have been trying florida seiboldii for years. 3 times it bit the dust - never made it through winter. Trying once more (found it at Costco last spring and too cheap to pass up) and so far, so good. But it IS in a container, so just in case of one of our rare Arctic blasts hits, I can haul it inside.

Dig a hole in the garden and drop the pot in and use your hands to firm the soil around the pot..keeping the level of soil in the pot equal to the soil in the garden and let it go..just remember to keep sticking that finger in to make sure it's staying moist...not soggy but moist and it'll be ready to plant into your garden in no time...I would pinch out the top ..leaving some green leaves so it can focus on the roots and not vining...that will rush those roots up....Jeanne

Not surprising to me. I have posted several times that I have a few friends in Michigan zone 5 that have successfully overwintered Florida Sieboldii several winters now. Each person has to give plants a try since everyone's zone 5 is not identical and each garden has microclimates in it that allows plants to survive that are not supposed to. The hardiness ratings of most clematis is not known with any certainty, hence the survey on Clematis on the Web about plant growth characteristics and hardiness ratings. Ophelia you might want to plant your sieboldii in a protected area where it will either remain covered with snow all winter or offer more protection. In the past when I didn't know the hardiness of some brugmansias that I was growing, I got a big 5 gallon pot that a plant had come in and filled it with leaves. The pot was inverted over the area where the brug stalks were cut back and kept in place over the winter by adding bricks to the top of the pot. Make sure to plant your plant deeper in the ground than it was in its original pot so the roots are further in the ground and further insulated.

Congratulations!! I have had a love/hate relationship with this particular vine for many, many years :-) Managed to kill off several of them before also encountering them for sale at Costco. I believe it was a 4-pack with 2 each of 2 different vines that I shared with my sister. Only one of the two Sieboldii's turned out to be that....and of course it was the one I gave to my sister. When she moved into a condo, I dug hers up and managed to grow it on successfully in a container for a couple of seasons before last year, when it did absolutely nothing!! I tend not to give up on clems unless I know for sure they are dead-dead and not just masquerading as dead :-) It is still alive but off to a very slow start this year. I doubt I will see any flowers this season. An extraordinarily picky clematis to grow!! The flower in the OP's photo is not yet fully open so I would guess it will look more as it should once that happens. btw, the second Costco selection in that deal was Ramona and that has taken off like gangbusters!
